Featured Listing: Profitable 5-Year-Old Productized WordPress Support Business

About the business

Tell us a little about yourself. What’s your background? How did you start the business?

My background has always been in agency. Before this, I built and sold a popular social search agency several years ago. I started this WordPress business as I fell in love with web development, and WordPress represented the biggest slice of the pie

How have you marketed the product and where are your customers originating from?

Our customers come from LinkedIn outreach, organic SEO, or referral from our hosting partner.

Is the asset on your listing owner-operated, how much time does it take to run the business, who else is needed on the team, and what is automated?

It’s owner-operated and fully automated. It takes 5 hours per week to manage the workload, and then I usually spend another 3-to 5 hours on outreach (which could be outsourced moving forward).

What does someone need to do to continue operating the business in its current form?

Assign support tickets to our developers as they come in. Answer any client questions and provide our developer with any extra he might need to complete support tickets or website builds.

Growing the business

Can you list a few opportunities for a potential new owner to continue growing the business?

There are huge opportunities for growth for the new owner. The biggest area to continue expanding outreach into the US market and then targeting Australia and New Zealand. If you know what you’re doing with paid ads, you could probably make a killing there also.

What has been the evolution of this asset since its launch?

The business initially started out as more of a traditional web development “agency”, but the agency model sucks, so I quickly productized the business and focused purely on WordPress support and building up the MMR.

Now everything runs itself. We do things, we do it well, and it’s a highly profitable, growing MMR revenue stream.

How does this business make money? What are the current revenue streams?

We make money by selling WordPress support plans, or by building WordPress websites

Most of our revenue comes from the WordPress support plans we sell, and most of our customers are agencies. They sign up for our plans via Stripe, and then outsource their client WordPress to us on a white-label basis.

We do all the work behind the scenes, they don’t have to hire a developer in-house, and everyone is happy!

What marketing channels are most profitable for the business?

As we know exactly who our customers are and where to find them, direct outreach via LinkedIn is the most profitable so far. It costs nothing but time and occasionally signing up to LinkedIn premium so you can export searches, and can be outsourced to a VA moving forward.

Paid advertising and remarketing could probably also be quite effective.

How does the business currently acquire customers and what is your breakdown for marketing costs?

LinkedIn outreach. The spend for this is negligible and included in the P&L. I have factored in the time it takes me to continue signing up new customers into the time requirements for the new owner (5-10 hours per week).

Usually, I spend 20-60 mins per day on this.

How big is your current team? How many people does it take to run this business?

2 – I and a developer

What’s the reason for selling your business on Flippa?

I want to work on a passion project next and need the money from this sale to fund that.
