THE DOMAIN

◅◅◅◅◅◅◅◅◅◅◅ ▻▻▻▻▻▻▻▻▻▻▻

1. Vintage Gaming

Vintage Gaming is the playing or collecting of older personal computer, console, and arcade video games. Usually based upon systems that are obsolete or discontinued, these games are played either on the original hardware, on modern hardware via emulation, or on modern hardware via ports or compilations.

2. The Games and Companies

Among the most popular vintage games are those produced around the 1980s and 1990s, and include video games for systems and consoles such as the Atari 2600, Nintendo Entertainment System, Master System, Mega Drive, Super NES, Game Boy, PlayStation, and Nintendo 64 as well as personal computer games for the Commodore 64, MSX, ZX81, ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, Commodore Amiga, NEC PC-88, PC-98, Sharp X1, Sharp X68000, FM-7 and DOS platforms.

Arcade games are also popular, especially early games by Konami, Sega, Atari, Taito, Williams Electronics, Namco, Nintendo, Technos, Capcom, and SNK.

3. Future of Vintage Gaming

Other than the Pac-Man you might have grown up with, vintage gaming will be redefined in the future with constant additional add ons. Many valuable products from the past becomes will become vintage.

In five to ten years or so, Xbox 360 games will be very cheap to buy, like PS2 games, but they will still sell.

GAME category director Charlotte Knight says: “A number of our customers are still getting considerable use out of their older consoles. The PS2 and original Xbox are still great pieces of kit as well as an affordable entry point to gaming."

There is a wide possible range of software, hardware, digital content and accessories available to customers, and as long as there is demand for these games, companies will continue to sell them.

PS2 always sells well. At the right offer PS2 software is a brilliant daily seller. James-Turvey says that Xbox 360 games will eventually inherit the vintage gaming crown. There will be competition in the vintage gaming space.

4. Increasing Market

GAME category director Charlotte Knight said:

"As long as you can keep the trade cycle going there’s still life in those old yet very playable games."

There is no reason why vintage and digital can’t go hand-in-hand. The ever-increasing number of platforms and ways to game provide a huge opportunity for publishers and retailers to help unlock the wealth of digital content that is available.

"A few months ago a range of Sega digital download codes launched, opening up arcade games to a whole new audience."

“It’s fun to be able to offer a new way for parents to play alongside their kids and to see a revival of some iconic games and characters. In fact, we’ve seen such a great response that we recently extended the range."
