Description

Rule The Seas is a browser based pirate themed MMORPG.  The game has a loyal fan base that has been playing for years, and would explode back into a thriving community with a little TLC.  The game is still producing ample income, however, it has been much larger in the past and with some love it can grow to be a thriving 6 figure business again.

The game is monitized by the sale of premium memberships and virtual consumable items.  Prices range from $3 to $550.  The game comes with a user base of over 175,000+ and their contact information is included.

To succeed in this business you will need to make additions to the game, add new content / quests, as well as provide users with customer support.  Listening to their wants and needs will ensure the future success of the platform.

The buyer will receive the following:

  • The game server on it's current hosting account so there will be no downtime
  • Phone / Email / Messenger support during a 3 month transition period
  • Exclusive rights to the artwork, platform, and domain names

Costs:

  • Hosting is $50 / Month
  • Merchant account fees are $15 a month (Merchant account not included)

Requirements:

  • Buyer will need to have a paypal account
  • Buyer may wish to get a merchant account to process customer credit cards (Referrals available)

Additional Revenue Details

2011 Gross Revenue:  $41,945.73

2010 Gross Revenue:  $97,597.71

The only cost involved is $50/Month hosting and payment processing expenses through PayPal and Merchant Accounts.

The game has been on autopilot for the last year.  With active administration 6 figure sales would be no problem.

Additional Traffic Details

Traffic is comprised of loyal registered users who play the game.

    - Reserve: No reserve.
    - Unfortunately I do not have an analytics report at this time, only verifiable revenue statistics. (I am happy to let buyers into my PayPal as a guest to see the stats if they are serious)
    - It would take a motivated buyer a week or two to fully understand the business. We are available by phone, email, skype or otherwise to help during the first 3 months.
    - Daily duties: Customer Service, Forum Moderation (Player mods can be recruited), Adding Content.
    - Traffic: Entirely organic. No promotion anywhere. SEO rankings are all page 2 for major keywords. With a little link building you could push tons more traffic to the site. We're too busy with other projects to manage this one or promote it further.
Please let me know if you have any other questions.

    Hello adamofyeg,
    Couple questions:
    1. Are there tools that have been created to help build content for the game? what are they? What do they do?

    2. How many hours each day do you have people working on the game just to maintain it? how many people in total?

    3. When you say "exclusive rights to the platform" do you mean all the code for the game as well as the software itself?

    4. I registered for the game, but haven't received a message that I have in fact been registered. How long does it take to become a new member? Is it an auto response who does the Admin have to OK all new registrations?

    1) There are tools to create content, though, some php/database experience would be ideal.
Here are the current tools available to admins:
    - Group purchase organizer

    - Mass Email

    - Mass Mail

    - Quest Creator

    - Port Creator

    - Shop Creator

    - Item Creator

    - Item / Port / NPC / Loot / Professions tables

    - IP Search

    - IP Missmatch Table (To find cheaters)

    - Player mail search

    - Top Purchaser List

    - Purchase Log

    - Transfer Log

    - Mail Log

    - Mail Report Log

    - Attack Log

    - Customer Service Center

    - Post News

    - Duplicate Item Check
Some of these features are deprecated and/or turned off.
    2) We have people working 0 hours right now to maintain it. New owners may find a little customer service backlog but it will be good for them. I would suggest to turn it into a viable 6 figure business again 2-5 hours daily would be a good investment. These would not be intensive hours, but hours checking in on the chat, conversing with players in the forums, etc. Player mods are available and they would jump at the opportunity. A programmer with 50 hours of work could really clean up the player requests and whenever there are updates they buy, and buy big.
    3) Exclusive rights as in the code, artwork, platform, user data, etc. We will not be reusing anything and have never sold it before.
    4) No. Once you register you are in the game. You do not have to currently verify your email to register (This can be changed of course)

    Hi adamofyeg,
Regarding the income statements, I don't see "ruletheseas.com" mentioned anywhere in the attached income documents. Please provide detailed PayPal PDF reports for the last 2 years instead.
As for the traffic, I see that the Google Analytics tracking JavaScript code is installed but it's been commented out in the HTML. Please reactivate the tracking code and attach verified Google Analytics reports for the site.

We need verifiable proof of income and traffic so we can bid with confidence.
Also, what keywords does the site rank for?
You said "A programmer with 50 hours of work could really clean up the player requests". What are those requests and at what frequency should the programmer spend those 50 hours? Is it on a weekly or monthly basis?

Do we need to have a full time programmer on staff to maintain the site?
    Thanks,

    Bob.

Game looks appealing so I thought I would give it a whirl -- registered but unable to log in for a look. Is it currently up and running? Also, I notice in the previous dialogue it would take about 50 hours for a programmer to clean up play requests. Does that mean there is that amount of back log in it would take this work to bring requests to a current status. What would be the knowledge requirements for a programmer to work on this project? As a website designer/creator (not having php, java or other "hard" programming skills -- a partner would be ideal, correct?
You state part of the income is from players purchasing updates. In a perfect world, how often should there be updates to the game and I am assuming this is also a programmer function.
As I said in the beginning, the game looks cool on the landing page.... wish I could get inside to check it out more.
    Thanks,
    YodaRules

Those are scans of the PayPal PDF. They won't say Rule The Seas on them because it is under the company name, and I have no interest in disclosing my home address on this site (That is what is blacked out). If you bid on the auction, and sign an NDA, I would be happy to provide you with a login to our PayPal that will allow you to view the reports. That should satisfy your request. If you actually want to buy the site, I will be an open book in private with you.
I am happy to re-activate Google Analytics. It was turned off over a year ago due to their servers taking too long to load. I think it was just a bad day for GA, but it was lagging our server that day. (Done- Report in a few days)
What I meant by the 50 hours is the players want more content and haven't had any updates in almost a year. A programmer would not need to spend 50 hours a week or even monthly to maintain the site. However, the more effort put in, the more profit you will receive. At one point we had a staff of 6 adding content to the site full-time and the site made more than $1,000,000 in a year.
I can see your next question brewing: If that's true, why sell it, why not put in the effort?
    1) My company has a large portfolio of other websites that are far more profitable and require our attention.
    2) After 6 years of pirates I don't want to say 'Yaaaarrrg' anymore, it isn't fun. We're auctioning off all of our game assets with this being the first and are going to focus on our B2B service based businesses.
A full time programmer is not require at all. We haven't made an update in forever, but like I said, I have no doubts the effort would be rewarded.

I just logged in and test registered an account without a problem? Players are online and playing away.
If you are looking for an ideal situation, yes a partner would be in order. Just to be clear, by ideal you would be looking to add features, advertise, and grow the platform. You could handle it on your own, but growing it would be an issue.
There is a small backlog of customer service, but the 50 hours was directed at making additions, adding content, meeting with players and finding out what they want, etc.
None of the income comes from players buying updates, they purchase virtual consumable items like points, potions, and otherwise. When the administration makes an update, player purchases surge.
Give logging in and registering another try. Please let me know if you have any other questions, I am happy to answer them.

The merchant account is non-transferable though and not required. The platform is currently integrated with Authorize.net.

Yes, it can be looked at as good in a sense, room for improvement and increased profit, so as long as the majority of players haven't already decided to migrate to one of the other thousands of browser based games out there.

Br3nt pointed out that our current players are unhappy about the lack of administration attention they are receiving. He is absolutely correct. The game produces income now and they are unhappy that we do not provide support (haven't for 6-8 months.)
This is great news for the new owners: Players WANT to play the game so they are unhappy we aren't making additions. These games word of mouth spread like wildfire and as soon as new owners start to put some love in towards the players they will no-doubt be rewarded.

    Hi Max,
This is one of our older game assets and was originally under a different brand, we started Booty Gaming and processed all the payments under Booty Gaming, but never wanted to include it in BG's public holdings.
http://www.bootygaming.com/flippa.html -- There is your requested proof.
Most of BG's projects remain unfinished. We'll most likely sell those assets in the near future.

gamegenie's comment was removed due to it's nonconstructive nature. Insinuated that fortecfiles was actually me and was some type of fraudulent account or suspicious.
    1) Not me, I have already disclosed my other account with positive feedback.

    2) fotecfiles has done over 140k in business on Flippa. I don't know him, but I do appreciate the positive comment and wish he would bid!
Also suggested we're trying to defraud everyone because Booty Gaming is the company name and we have other games.
    1) This is true, I have clearly stated we have other assets.

    2) We have multiple PayPal accounts.

    3) The financials listed on this site are accurate and only reflect purchases made on Rule The Seas.

    4) Our other games have $0 in revenue anyways, we never completed them.

Unfortunately this is an evil that is not entirely solved with coding. We employ many measures to prevent cheating, but players sharing their passwords and using the same usernames/passwords to sign up for other games, chat rooms, forums, etc will always lead to users having account issues.
If there was a major issue the admin accounts would clearly be the first target of a hacker. We use unique user names and secure unique passwords and don't seem to ever have an issue.
I plan to spend some decent time training new owners on common issues and security risks. -- Most issues that are 'hacking' related are not actually 'hacking'.

To be fair, the players found the Flippa listing and posted it in the forums. Since, purchase volume has dropped significantly. They want to know who the new owner is and what they're going to do. The cat is out of the bag so to speak.
It would have been very easy for us to run a sale, or do something else to squeeze revenue out of the users to boost the statistics, but I do not want to do that to the new owners.

You play by leveling and killing other players or NPC's similar to a typical MMO but with more room for imagination. There is also no strict time commitment to log in so players can play for 2 minutes or 2 hours.

Please read the above comments for more details:
    - PHP/MySQL/Javascript

    - LiquidWeb (stormondemand.com)

    - Yes, the entire hosting account will be transfered

    - 1 CPU, 2 gigs of ram, 150 gig hard drive (Have 500+ GB of backups for the new owner if they want it)

    - An artist created the images for the game that we had on staff. He is no longer with us but I can make the referral if you'd like

    Hi Glen,
I have submitted analytics via the Flippa validation system earlier this morning. For some reason it has not updated.
If it does not by the time I hot the office in the AM I'll at least take screenshots and post them while we wait.

    Hi Adam,
It seems logical that there would be a wait and see approach from existing players regarding sales. I'm surprised none of them seems to have offered to come and bid on it.
At sale time, can you confirm you be able to provide a signed document confirming your firm owns all assets associated with the game? And fully transfered them over to the new owner?
    Cheers

Actually, I have received quite a few offers from players to purchase the game. Unfortunately they were not qualified.
Absolutely, I would be happy to provide an agreement to the new owner at their request.

I have received a few comments wondering about the Google Analytics -- Please note that this is an analytics report for only a couple days. Please see the chart in the report to fully understand the actual date range, this is not a full months report. For more details as to why, please read the above comments.

Is the code base 100% original? did you write it from scratch or was there another code base you built off of?

As a long time devoted loyal player of RTS i would like to be the first to welcome the new owners to the game. I hope you take over with the enthusiasm we would hope for and are ready to tear into it and bring this family back to life. We are behind you 100%. If need be i would like to volunteer to be an Ambassador for the players to work with the new owners on any and all concerns that you may have. Thanks ICEMAN

    Hi Adam
I see you launched two other versions of the game (v2.ruletheseas.com and v3.ruletheseas.com) at some point. Wonder if you (or iceman!) could give me some more info about these? They now seem to have been taken offline?
When were these operated, what happened and are they included in the revenue stats?
    Many thanks!

    Kyle

    Hi Lion,
They are not included in the revenue stats.
We launched multiple servers of the same game (mostly) and they were called v2 and v3. Eventually when the servers died down, we merged them into v1.
As a suggestion to the new owners, launching a second server that is entirely fresh and driving some advertising traffic to it would be a great way to kickstart some immediate large revenue. Many of the current players would start there again, probably some old, and any new advertising is always best with a fresh playing field.
