In February 2010, a college student launched a website where users could submit stories, "puff" or "pass" them, and comment on their favorites. Over time, the site evolved into a platform that generated enough income to cover living expenses for several months, thanks to a vibrant and engaged community. Built using Python and Django, the site ran on Google App Engine, but a change in Google's pricing prompted considerations for migrating to a different platform. The operating costs were minimal, approximately $20 per month. The website employed template caching and a background job for story ranking to maintain efficient page load times, though improvements were deemed non-essential.
The site gained a significant following on social media, with a notable presence on platforms like Twitter, where it amassed 10,000 followers, including a few celebrities. Initially, revenue was generated through direct ad sales and Adsense, but the revenue declined when focus shifted solely to Adsense. However, revenue increased after introducing live chat support and adding advertisements from a specific ad network. Despite operating on App Engine with costs in the single digits per month, the introduction of chat support incurred an additional $24 monthly.
At its peak between July and October 2010, the site attracted nearly 300,000 unique visitors and 1 million page views per month. While traffic subsequently declined, this was largely attributed to the owner's reduced attention. Despite this, the site continued to gradually attract new users and retain its core community.
