A special reunion featuring the main cast of the "Harry Potter" series is being produced for HBO Max to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the first film in the franchise, "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone." Set to premiere on January 1, 2022, this retrospective will include new interviews with Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, director Chris Columbus, and other cast members. In addition to its HBO Max release, the special will later air on TBS and Cartoon Network prior to the theatrical debut of "Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore."
The reunion comes amid ongoing discussions about a new potential adaptation of "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child." The play, which revolves around the children of the original characters, could be adapted for the big screen, though there is no official confirmation yet. The Harry Potter brand remains immensely popular, with a total revenue of $14 billion from books, films, theme parks, and merchandising.
Notably absent from the reunion lineup is author J.K. Rowling, who has faced criticism over her past comments. However, archival footage of her discussing the series will be included. The production is managed by Warner Bros. Unscripted Television with executive producers from Casey Patterson Entertainment and Pulse Films.
The franchise has generated $7 billion from its films alone, with the potential for additional projects still being explored by WarnerMedia, hinting at an enduring cultural impact. An exclusive preview of the anniversary special will be part of a quiz competition, "Harry Potter: Hogwarts Tournament of Houses," airing in November 2021.
