Description

Up for sale is screen-capture-video.com.  I bought this off of Sitepoint in July and I am taking a big financial loss on selling it.  I recently missed a credit card payment and my interest rate when up to 29.99% and I must come up with $3700 or I’ll never be able to pay it off. I have $5,600 invested in this site.

When I bought the site I changed the design ($500) and lowered the price thinking that would result in more conversions. The time-on-site has increased almost 100% after changing the design.

The software is the CamStudio open source software with a custom GUI. Commercial licenses are allowed.

Suggestions on improving performace:

  • Play with the pricing.  It was originally $37 and I lowered to $24 thinking that would increase the conversions.  I think adding $5 to the price would have no significant effect and would add $55 to the current monthly income ($660/year).

  • Tweak Adwords.  This was the first site I have used Adwords on (my other sites have been AdSense sites).  I was only able to get conversion tracking to work for Checkout Orders and PayPal orders if they used the download link on the site instead of following the one in the auto generated email.

  • Update the FAQ page (spammy looking now) and put up a couple more demo videos)

  • Freebies.  Everyone loves freebies…

Common reasons for refunds (yes, I’m admitting to providing refunds!):

  • They bought the software in the middle of the night and the key went straight to SPAM so they bought something else and asked for a refund.  The key delivery system could be rewritten so that the “recover key” link asked for the email address and gave the download link if the email matched the database of orders (I’m not php savvy so I couldn’t do this).
  • Vista Reason # 1. Installing on Vista requires turning off UAC and some people cannot handle this or complain about it.
  • Vista Reason #2.  On two occasions, weird lines appear in the videos when using Vista.
  • A couple of people have tried to rip movies using the software and it will not capture sound if you try to do this (on new systems, at least).

All in all, refunds have not been a big issue and I always provide them

I'm sure I have forgotten something! Please ask questions.

I will not be able to reply most week days before 6pm central.  I aplogize for this, but I've had to take on an extra job that doesn't involve sitting at a desk.

Revenue Details

Last months income (in the “new” economy, last month is more representative than other better-performing months) was 235.46 (*12 = 2,825.52) after $70.54 in adwords). (After PayPal fees)
Hi there. Why would someone pay for this product if they can get it here free? http://camstudio.org/
Some people are too lazy to search for a decent free program and think that since they pay for ScreenShow, its better or different. There are lots of sites out there that sell open source software.
Please verify site access.
coolguyrob, site access is verfied in the lower right hand corner in black text. Thanks for looking.

    >>>>>How many downloads do you get per day? And can you provide downloads by country stats

Do you mean sales? Sales are not daily, but there were 13 sales and 2 refunds from Dec 5 to Jan 5th.

    >>>>>What is profit after credit card fees, advertising and refunds?

As stated above: "Last months income (in the “new” economy, last month is more representative than other better-performing months) was 235.46 (*12 = 2,825.52) after $70.54 in adwords). (After PayPal fees)"

That includes two refunds (visible in the PayPal screenshot).

    >>Do you mean sales?
No. I mean how many downloads of the software do you get in average per day and what is the conversion rate for a sale (1%,1.5%, more) from your total downloads?

What programming language is the software written in? And don't you have a trial download? All I can see on your site is the ability to buy but there is no way to try the program

    From the old auction listing:

It currently sells appx. 15 copies per month with zero promotion, half through affiliates, half directly from the main site.

What happened to the affiliate sales?

    >>>>No. I mean how many downloads of the software do you get in average per day and what is the conversion rate for a sale (1%,1.5%, more) from your total downloads?

Still not 100% sure what you mean. There is no trial version, so the only downloads are sales.

    >>>>What programming language is the software written in? And don't you have a trial download? All I can see on your site is the ability to buy but there is no way to try the program

You can get details on the language/programming at camstudio's website.

There is no trial version because I do not know how to program a trial version with a watermark or limited features. The no questions asked return policy is my version of a trial version.

    >>>>What happened to the affiliate sales?

I dropped ClickBank from the site because 1) I don't like ClickBank, 2) I was hoping to get all the sales myself and limit adwords competition.

Affiliate sales could be brought back in, it was approved by ClickBank before and I've had 2-3 people email me out of the blue and ask to be affiliates.

Note: if you go back to affiliate sales you will have to change the key/delivery system, which is currently RelyCheckout.

Hi, how much time per week do you spend on the site and are you willing to do any training and help with moving the site over to my server, etc...

    >>>>>>Hi, how much time per week do you spend on the site and are you willing to do any training and help with moving the site over to my server, etc...

Answering emails and providing the occasional refund takes less than a half hour a week.

I'm happy to help with the transition and training, there is really nothing to it.

Note while its on my mind:

Additional way to increase sales: add a "contact us" or "ask a question" link. There is currently no contact details on the site. This is something I had been meaning to correct. I'm sure at least a couple of customers are lost because their questions are not answered.
