Description
Wordpress Link Cloak is a Wordpress plugin I had developed mainly for my personal use, but I decided it would be better to try and sell a few copies to recoup the costs. In this thread I won’t go into the specifics of what it does as you can find all the details by going to http://www.wordpresslinkcloak.com
Why am I selling?
This is the first product I’ve ever had developed and tried to sell. I was interested in seeing what the whole process was like, but honestly I just don’t enjoy being a sales person, I’m far more interested in blogging, designing, and running forums. I also dislike responding to support emails as I find it difficult to talk about technical aspects of the software, although there have only been about 3-4 emails in total from customers.
What’s included...
The WordpressLinkCloak.com domain name, registered at Name Cheap with a free push
- Life time Easy-Download.com Membership which allows you to easily protect your software from being stolen
- Permission to use the video demonstration, although the audio is very quiet, so making your own video is recommended
- All the graphics, landing page, the blog etc
- Full rights to the Wordpress Link Cloak software - I will never sell the software again. At most I will use it on a couple of my own blogs.
The potential...
Having never built an email list, never marketed myself, and just not being very experienced with the sales side of things there is definitely a lot of potential with Wordpress Link Cloak.
The #1 concern I’ve heard from people interested in the software is the price, which whilst cheaper than competitors, probably doesn’t look too good to many bloggers. So why don’t I just drop the price? I honestly just want to get of the sales game. I promised myself when doing business never do it for the money and always enjoy myself, which is why I’m trying to pass this business onto someone else who enjoys sales and wants to grow a product.
Wordpress Link Cloak was on DealDotCom.com on the 24th of April at a price of $37 which generated sales of $475 (DealDotCom took a $12 cut per sale, so I kept $25 per sale). It’s quite obvious that people want the product, and like the product, so a lower price point and better marketing could definitely help with that.
Initially I sent out a bunch of emails to internet entrepreneurs in hopes of getting some exposure on blogs (links below), which is why most of the transactions only net me ~$17. I’m not experienced with PPC nor spent much time promoting the product myself, rather focusing on getting affiliates, which was probably counter-productive in a way.
Expenses
- Programming: $4500
- Domain name: $8.41
- Easy-Download.com Membership: $147
- Initial Click Bank Fee: $49.95
- Review on WinningTheWeb.com: $100
People say I probably overpaid for the programming, which may well be true, but the programmer was great to work with, completing the entire project promptly and only requiring a little verification on particular details at the beginning. I can give you the name and eLance username of the programmer, but I can’t guarantee if he’ll work with you, or the price he’ll charge. Seeing as the software is “complete”, finding a programmer for minor bug fixes that pop up is all that is recommended.
I’m selling at a loss...?
Yes, I am making a loss with this sale, but like I said twice in this thread, I just want to be out of the sales business. It’s not my forte’ and writing blogs, running forums, and designing is what I love to do, so that’s why I’m going to focus on those three areas. It was a good experience, and I don’t regret running this project but it’s the only thing I own (in terms of online businesses) that is irritating me as I don’t feel I personally can make anything great out of it.
