About the business
Tell us a little about yourself. What’s your background? How did you start the business?
I have been in E-Commerce since 2017 in a variety of niches, the idea for this website came from a trip to Budapest when I saw some hilarious renaissance animal portraits in a squatter bar. Being a dog lover/owner myself, I thought it would be a hilarious product that pet lovers would love.
As an eCommerce business, where are your products made?
All of our products are produced in and shipped from the US, however, we also have a fulfilment centre through our suppliers API in the UK, Canada, Australia and Europe for our canvases. We also can fulfil mugs from Canada and the UK and phone cases from Australia.
What can you tell us about your Customer Lifetime Value (CLV) and Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC)
Our historical LTV is $93, our CAC in November was 39 dollars and in December we got down to 33 dollars.
How have you marketed the product and where are your customers originating from?
Our main paid traffic sources are Facebook, Instagram and google (shopping, search). We also generate a significant amount of sales from Email marketing (31%) and have a very healthy repeat customer rate (24%). As a supplement to our webstore, we also have an Etsy shop with all our products that generated 64k USD in the last year.
Is the asset on your listing owner-operated, how much time does it take to run the business, who else is needed on the team, and what is automated?
I spend about 10 hours a week on the business. My tasks mainly involve coordinating with the ad agencies that manage Google and Facebook as well as our graphic design manager, coming up with new design ideas as well as back end strategies (upsells, email, AOV, and some A/B testing). These tasks could also be automated but I enjoy doing them
We currently have 30 graphic designers on our team, as well as 4 Quality Assurance designers and 2 managers. We also have 2 Virtual Assistants that provide customer support through email and live chat. The business is highly automated.
What does someone need to do to continue operating the business in its current form?
The business is automated to the extent where the new owner could work a very small amount of hours on the business and automate even the few tasks that I do myself. Given that we have established processes with order processing, quality assurance, art approval as well as ad management of our paid traffic by multiple agencies, the owner would essentially have an overarching coordination role of the various teams that make up our business. Email marketing is one thing I have done myself (although much of this is also automated through set flows, however, this can also quite easily be outsourced to an email marketing agency if the new owner likes.
Growing the business
Can you list a few opportunities for a potential new owner to continue growing the business?
I think collaborating further with influencers, making a strong push to new ad platforms that are becoming more and more advanced like TikTok and making some affiliate marketing efforts would be massive for the website.
What has been the evolution of this asset since its launch?
We started as a team of 5 people at the end of 2019, several of the designers that I first hired are still with us to this day. The business grew massively in 2020 and the team grew to 30+ designers. We started off with around 10 designs and now have over 550+ across everything from canvases, to posters, to phone cases, to mugs, to blankets, pillows and more. We focused on creating designs that are different from our competitors that all seemed to be copying each others renaissance designs, and instead, we diversified
our catalogue with professions, parody designs, sports and more. The uniqueness of our products allowed us to stand out and grow to 7 figures+ in sales per year. We also have since added an Etsy store to the mix which has been a nice revenue boost and did amazing this Q4.
How does this business make money? What are the current revenue streams?
Revenue is generated through our Shopify store and our Etsy store.
What marketing channels are most profitable for the business?
Facebook, Instagram, Google, Etsy Ads.
How does the business currently acquire customers and what is your breakdown for marketing costs?
About 65% of our paid traffic comes from Facebook/Instagram, 30% comes from Google and >5% comes from adroll.
How big is your current team? How many people does it take to run this business?
We have 30 designers, 2 Virtual Assistants, 2 Managers and 4 Quality Assurance designers (as well as a Facebook agency + google agency that are outsourced).
