The idea for Pickleball Patty came during one of our online bootcamps listening to Flippa CEO Blake Hutchison. While listening to Blake talk about successful sites and niches on Flippa, Yvette was doing what she loves – keyword research. As she explains:

“I wanted something with that senior twist on exercise. I thought, well, , I understand what’s going on there and everything that I put in, you know, seniors tennis or seniors exercise or anything with that, the word pickleball kept coming up and I, at first I thought it was like a joke… I’ve never heard of pickleball ever.”

This is a crucial lesson for anyone looking to buy websites on Flippa or build their own: you don’t need to be an expert in the niche. Yvette had never heard of pickleball, let alone played it. To this day, she admits: “I haven’t even seen a court.”

  • Educational Content (75%): Rules, strategies, and beginner guides

  • Authentic Voice: Writing from a beginner’s perspective for other beginners

As she puts it: “Everything that I had to write was from me. I had to understand what I was reading and I had to look at this that you know I’m a beginner. I have no idea about this sport. So what do I want to know that I can tell people?”

Phase 1: Amazon Associates 

Yvette started with Amazon’s affiliate program, the easiest entry point for beginners. Despite generating $4,700 in sales, Amazon’s low commission rates meant she only earned a % of that.

Phase 2: Direct Affiliate Partnerships 

Smart move: Yvette found Pickleball Central, a specialized retailer offering 10% commission (later increased to 15%). This simple switch dramatically increased her earnings.

Phase 3: High-Ticket Affiliate Sales 

By connecting with a manufacturer of premium pickleball equipment, Yvette negotiated $100 per sale and sold multiple units, earning extra through high-ticket affiliate sales. 

Christmas Bonus: During the holiday season, the site generated a high number of commissions – proof of the seasonal potential in passion niches.

Smart Traffic Strategies That Scaled the Site

Beyond basic SEO and content creation, Yvette implemented two clever strategies that significantly boosted traffic:

1. Pinterest Marketing

Despite not being a social media user herself, Yvette had her VA repurpose articles for Pinterest. The results speak for themselves – the new owner is now getting 10,000 monthly views from Pinterest alone, a 10x increase.

2. User-Generated Content Through Upwork

This was genius: Yvette paid pickleball players to share their personal stories. One person even wrote two stories (about himself and his mother). This strategy provided:

After two years, Yvette decided to sell for personal reasons and because she recognized pickleball was experiencing explosive growth in America.
