Flippa has seen incredible success of not only recent ccTLD auctions, but domain hacks in particular. You may have spotted the current auction for what is probably one of the greatest domain-hack portfolios of all-time (and that’s not just editorial discretion speaking).
I “sat down” with the owner of these domains, Hadi Naser, to learn more about this portfolio.
Thanks for speaking with me, Hadi. Tell us a bit about your background with domain names, and how you came to amass such a stellar collection of .LY domain-hacks.
I am the CEO and founder of my own startup company, Libyan Spider. Started by myself in 2002, it has grown to 20 employees over the last 12 years.
I found out about .LY domains in 2003, and out of interest started registering many over the years. I always knew that these domains would be ready to sell when the right time, and buyer, came along. I feel like the time is now and am excited to put my collection through Flippa.
Is there an investor or company (in particular, or speaking abstractly) that you could see benefiting from this acquisition?
This list includes a large number of premium domains that any investor will find attractive and suitable to create a successful brand for any startup business. The great thing about domains ending in .ly is that the domain can be read as a word; for example, “social.ly” would be remembered as simply “socially” — which makes it easier to recall and a really unique way to brand yourself.
Google, in particular, I would imagine could benefit from acquiring such an investment, in that these domains are actual words that can be read including its .ly ending — and the possibilities are endless. Google is just an example, though, as I believe any enterprise investor would find this portfolio to be profitable to them in the long run.
Mike Carson, one of Flippa’s most successful domain sellers, is co-brokering this portfolio with you. How did you and Mike cross paths, and what convinced you that Flippa was the right marketplace to sell your domain names?
I have sold 23 .ly domains for over $235,000, including local.ly [which sold for $100,000 in 2011]. Mike is actually a client of mine and over time we have become friends. It was my desire to sell these domains together and his idea to use Flippa to do so.
