Tell us a little about yourself. What’s your background? How did you start the business?
I’ve been in the digital marketing space for well over 4 years. I started building websites when I was in high school and one of my first jobs out of college was in digital marketing for a major sporting goods manufacturer. I started this website the first summer out of college when I saw the opportunity for a brand-able expired domain that had a good backlink profile. Having done my own personal SEO projects in college with some minor success, I figured this would be a great way to test my skills.
How have you marketed the product and where are your customers originating from?
The fire pits market themselves. They command a high price but provide a lot of value to the user experience. These are the BEST wood-burning fire pits you can get for your backyard. Visitors originate from the organic search results and YouTube.
Is the asset on your listing owner-operated, how much time does it take to run the business, who else is needed on the team, and what is automated?
This is an owner-operated business. Over the past couple of months, the only time spent on it has been to update the platform and any plugins. A content writer would be helpful but is not required.
What does someone need to do to continue operating the business in its current form?
Update the platform and plugins. It would be wise to update content as new products are released and continue building upon the current posts.
Can you list a few opportunities for a potential new owner to continue growing the business?
Display ads through a platform like Ezoic or Adsense. Otherwise, additional products related to the outdoor living space are a great opportunity. Grilling somewhat overlaps with one particular fire pit.
What has been the evolution of this asset since its launch?
I didn’t see much in the beginning. Commissions were small, but I was building traction and trying to figure out the angle to bring this website to market. Eventually, after purchasing my first home and looking for a unique fire pit, the light bulb went off. Fire pits are a centrepiece for outdoor living areas, have a high purchase price, and are often a thoroughly researched purchase.
The initial review did well after adding in supplementary content about firewood. Having a background in woodworking and DIY-type projects, writing this content was second nature to me.
As I continued to push new content to the site, the site’s traffic continued to grow and climb in the rankings. In addition to the organic rankings, I started creating a few videos related to the fire pits. These videos gained some traction and further helped drive traffic and affiliate sales.
Because the site did well in the SERPs and the videos were getting traction, I noticed the site was getting mentioned in a few Facebook groups directly associated with the product. The people in these groups had additional questions and provided some good feedback on already existing content. I took this into consideration and wrote new content while revising some already existing content.
