Featured Listing: 10-Year-Old Adult Gay Gossip Blog

About the business

Tell us a little about yourself. What’s your background? How did you start the business?

I was obsessed with Sex And The City growing up, so I started this blog while I was in university studying creative writing. So it was initially about my dating/sex exploits on the London gay scene. Over time the blog evolved into something much broader and bigger than I could’ve imagined.

As an eCommerce business, where are your products made?

iMovie, WP Quiz, Sproutvideos

How have you marketed the product and where are your customers originating from?

I market the membership via my email list and on the website itself (traffic is then sent through via social media).

Is the asset on your listing owner-operated, how much time does it take to run the business, who else is needed on the team, and what is automated?

It is owner-operated (although I am a writer) and takes about 20-25 hours a week to run. If the owner is not a writer themselves, they should look to hire an editor. If they can also hire an editorial assistant, the website will grow even quicker.

All support and server for the website are automated, and they will help with unlimited tech issues 24/7.

What does someone need to do to continue operating the business in its current form?

Produce on average 1 piece of member content a day. Produce 3-4 articles a day, 4-5 days a week. (New articles bring new subscribers, while member posts keep them).

Also 1 general newsletter once a week, and 1 member newsletter every fortnight.

Growing the business

Can you list a few opportunities for a potential new owner to continue growing the business?

> They could invest in marketing strategy or even hire a marketer (some will work on commission) to put the site in front of more eyeballs.

> Start rebuilding the Instagram (the last one was deleted after some of the memes were reported) and market through there; I had a good click-through rate when I had the page up. Competitions on social do really well, even to get more email subscribers.

> Simply producing more content should get more sign-ups, and some of these could use affiliate links to give an extra monetary boost.

What has been the evolution of this asset since its launch?

It began as a personal dating blog and then started to evolve into more of a celebrity gossip blog, and now it has about a 60% adult material element to it.

How does this business make money? What are the current revenue streams?

We curate adult content, create adult quizzes and compile adult compilation videos. Revenue streams come from memberships (monthly, annual, and lifetime), affiliate sales (we have a long-running relationship with Mr. Man, and some sex toy brands), and there are some box ads.

What marketing channels are most profitable for the business?

Email marketing & social media

How does the business currently acquire customers and what is your breakdown for marketing costs?

The email platform costs $370/m. Other than that I don’t spend money on marketing.

How big is your current team? How many people does it take to run this business?

It is just me, it can be run by one person.
