This tutorial will show you how to use Market Samurai to perform initial keyword and domain ranking research for a website listed on Flippa.
Analysing The Website
The other day I found WrestlingMoves.org, a wrestling niche website for sale on Flippa and it grabbed my interest enough to want to perform some further research. I’m interested in this site because it appears to be receiving a respectable amount of traffic and also has a PageRank of 3. The listing also indicates that the site isn’t currently generating much revenue which suggests to me that, at the right price, this site could present a good opportunity to buy and monetize.
Starting a Project in Market Samurai
So now I’m going to jump over into Market Samurai. Market Samurai is essentially a keyword research tool that can also be used to do initial due diligence on sites for sale. I’m going to type in the main keyword that this particular site is targeted towards: you guessed it – “wrestling moves”. I’m also choosing United States as my region because if I decide to go ahead and buy this site then monetize it with something like Amazon’s affiliate program for example, my audience will mainly come from the U.S.
Keyword Research
The first part of my investigation looks at how many searches the keyword “wrestling moves” receives per day. Market Samurai provides me with a list of related keywords as well as the particular one I’m interested in. I’m going to go ahead and analyze the keywords so it generates statistics of daily searches for these keywords.
Analyzing Keywords
Market Samurai now shows me a keyword list together with statistics around each of the keywords. The three columns I’m interested in are Searches, SEOT and SEOC. The Searches column shows me how many daily searches this keyword receives. The SEOT column gives me an indication of how much traffic a website in position #1 might receive. While SEOC shows the number of pages that compete (or rank) for this search term. I’ve also used the Exact Match Type in this search as this will give me the most conservative figures. I’m happy to see this keyword receives around 1,300 searches per day so I’m ready to move on the the next step.
Competition Analysis & Search Position Check
Clicking over to the SEO Competition tab, Market Samurai gives me a detailed report of the top 10 websites ranking for “wrestling moves” in Google in the U.S. This report confirms that wrestlingmoves.org is ranking at number 2 for this search term. The report also gives me an indication of how competitive this niche is by providing stats on Domain Age (DA), PageRank (PR), Index Count (number of pages indexed in Google), Domain Backlinks (BLD) and a number of other search optimization factors that contribute to search engine results.
Not in the list?
If the site you’re investigating isn’t in the top 10 results for the keyword you’re investigating, you can add it using the Add custom URLs button at the bottom. This way you can compare a URL outside the top 10 results.
Monetization
OK, I’ve satisfying myself that wrestlingmoves.org ranks well for a keyword that receives a reasonable amount of traffic. Now I want to make sure I have some ways to monetize the site should I decide to buy it. Market Samurai includes a monetization module that gives you the ability to search Amazon, Click Bank, Commission Junction and PayDotCom affiliate networks for relevant products for you to market.
What’s Next?
The initial research I’ve done with Market Samurai has convinced me that it’s worthwhile digging a little deeper with my due diligence on this site. The next step would be to perform some of my other website buying due diligence tasks and decide what I’m willing to pay for this site before entering into the auction.
