What’s your background? How did you start the business?

When I started this business in 2015, I was a practising makeup artist. The majority of the available cosmetic brands, at the time, offered premium-priced products that were relatively expensive for the average makeup artist. It was hard enough that artists were struggling to earn a decent living by offering makeup as a service but the high priced products and tools made things even more difficult. There were not many individually-owned brands and it was a huge gap in the market.

I must admit that I had no prior business knowledge when I started, I just knew that I had identified a problem and I was eager to fix it. So I did some research, found high-quality suppliers, sold my first car and launched the business with 100 sets of makeup brushes. Sales did pretty well with zero marketing budget but my inexperience caught up with me as I had messed up my pricing and I could not account for any ROI. Before I knew it, the business had failed and I was devastated.

I took a break from the business, which gave me enough time to plan and prepare. In this time, I met my partner, who became a co-founder and brought in his vast knowledge of financial management that has helped the business thus far. We restarted the business again in 2019 with 12 colours of cosmetic glitters costing less than $500. We have generated over $150,000 in revenue ever since and expanded our product line with $68,000 worth of inventory available. Considering the affordability of our products, it is such a big deal that we have come this far.

As an eCommerce business, where are your products made?

Most of our products are sourced in bulk from different suppliers in China, packaging sourced in both China and the US and they are currently assembled in Los Angeles CA. Only one of our products is sourced and produced in the US because we developed the formulation for this product in-house.

What can you tell us about your Customer Lifetime Value (CLV) and Customer Acquisition Cost (CAC)

Considering the low prices of our products, which is the idea behind the brand, we have more volume in sales than high cost. Our average AOV is approximately $43, max CLV is approximately $240 with an average of $80 CAC is approximately $20. Hence, the ratio of average CLV to CAC is 4:1 and can get as high as 12:1.

How have you marketed the product and where are your customers originating from?

We use various marketing strategies to acquire new customers and retain existing customers, including Facebook ads, Email/SMS marketing, influencer marketing (unpaid), affiliate marketing (available to everyone), and content marketing. Over 90% of our customers are based in the United States and Canada, although we’ve had a few orders from Australia, France and the UK. The person who will buy the store can scale more with: better SEO, influencer marketing (paid), other types of social media ads, especially Snapchat ads, TikTok ads, and youtube ads. There is also room for expansion to other parts of the world, as the products are relatively lightweight and easy to ship via USPS.

Is the asset on your listing owner-operated, how much time does it take to run the business, who else is needed on the team, and what is automated?

This business is currently owner-operated. We have different personnel working on different things, so work varies per person. As the business owner, you would need approximately 30 – 60 minutes a day to check up on the business performance and see how work is going, which is about a maximum of 5 hours per week.

We have a customer service/social media manager whose job is to answer all our client’s emails (shipping updates, returns, loss of parcel) and social media inquiries and posts. Our cofounder works as the marketing manager/business analyst managing all our ad campaigns and improving business performance. Another person is responsible for order fulfilment.

So if you decide to buy this business, you will do well with a small team of 4-5

Operations manager (could be done by owner).

Social Media/Customer service personnel (can be split into two people, if necessary).

Marketing Manager (handles all marketing campaign and analytics).

Logistics personnel (this may also be two people, as work become a lot during peak periods).

What does someone need to do to continue operating the business in its current form?

In the next couple of weeks, not much. There is $68k worth of inventory available for the instant take-off of the business after handover. This would last a couple of weeks before you would require a restock. In this time, you can map out your plans and strategies for marketing and scaling. We currently have a system of digital marketing that would be shared with the buyer of this business and this should provide a good headstart as you map out your growth strategy.

However, we must highlight that this business is currently being run from home, so all inventory is stored in the family garage. If you buy this business, you will need storage space, like a garage or room to accommodate inventory.

Growing the business

Can you list a few opportunities for a potential new owner to continue growing the business?

One thing about cosmetics/makeup products is that they sell themselves. As long as you know how to navigate the community or hire the right hands, you will continue to grow the business. EA Beauty products are super duper attractive as well in terms of appearance and packaging, so there is a lot that can be done to do even better than we have done so far.

One is content marketing, which has been proven to be super helpful with blowing up small businesses in recent times. Free content marketing would be to use trendy reels, TikTok, how-to videos to market the products. This is a nice area of opportunity that we have not had the luxury to explore. Whoever buys the store can also scale more with: better SEO, influencer marketing (paid), other types of social media ads, especially Snapchat ads, TikTok ads, and youtube ads. Collaborative marketing is another great opportunity to explore, teaming up with other small brands and leveraging on each others’ audiences.

Another opportunity would be to explore tradeshows and beauty fairs, where products can be showcased in person. We recently got the contact of a lady that occasionally hosts free cosmetic fairs in different US states and we are happy to share this information.

We offered wholesale/bulk purchase at some point and it did excellently well in raising the AOV; however, we had to put a pause on the when we changed our CMS platform to Shopify. We recommend re-exploring this area of opportunity.

What has been the evolution of this asset since its launch?

In a simple sentence, we started with just $500 and we’ve sold over $120,000 worth of products with an available inventory of $68.000 in less than 3 years. This is the evolution we’ve had thus far and it can get better, if in the right hands.

How does this business make money? What are the current revenue streams?

Sales of the product (retail & wholesale) are the current revenue streams.

What marketing channels are most profitable for the business?

We currently use influencer marketing (unpaid), Affiliate marketing, Upsell tools, SEO, Google’s free listing, Email/SMS marketing and Facebook Ads. Facebook Ads have proven to be the most profitable so far. Kindly note that this is a very limited opinion because we did not explore a lot of other potentially profitable social media marketing channels.

How does the business currently acquire customers and what is your breakdown for marketing costs?

We mostly acquire customers via social media engagement, Facebook ads, website opt-in form and Google’s free listing. We spend mostly on Facebook Ads because it gives the highest returns and we pay a subscription for our email marketing service. This costs approximately $3000 per month.

How big is your current team? How many people does it take to run this business?

We are a 4-team group and it’s been run effectively so far with just 4 of us.

What’s the reason for selling your business on Flippa?

The only reason we are selling it is that we are moving out of the United States, and the nature of this business requires hands-on logistics and fulfilment within the United States. We want to pass this on to someone passionate and willing to scale this business as we would have loved to while making good returns on it as well.

View the listing on Flippa

About the business Tell us a little about yourself.
