Incredible opportunity to own a unique SaaS product. This SEO optimization platform plugs in directly with Microsoft Word, allowing you to be sure you’re on-site SEO is top notch while you’re in the middle of writing it. Great chance for a recurring revenue product that can be used across an array of industries.

Watch the video below to learn a bit more about the owner and his business.

Tell us a little about yourself. What’s your background?

The best way to describe myself is I’m an interesting character. My degree is in business from the University of Florida, I spent 10 years playing professional poker (which is where my love for data and processes came from), I’m an officer in the U.S. military, and I currently work as an SEO writer with works published in the Motley Fool, MSN, USA Today, and The Simple Dollar, to name a few.

I love data, problem solving, and genuinely trying to make the world a better place. Those tenants are what drove the creation of this product.

Have you been the only user of this product so far? If not, what experience have others had and how have they come across the product?

SEO Checkmark was originally created to solve a problem for myself. Originally, the product was something only I used to create better and more powerful articles for clients without having to upload the document into a CMS or another program to run my content checks. It was a dream for efficient workflows and helping watch my back. It was only after I showed it to a few other copywriters, clients, and people in the SEO field that I realized it was something that beginners, intermediate, and advanced SEO people, business owners, agencies, etc. could benefit from.

How much time would you expect a new owner to need to spend on this product in order to maintain it, add updates, and anything else outside of marketing?

The product is complete. The licensing is set up. Payment processing is already set up. The website is built. It’s genuinely turnkey. If the new owner wanted to add features, they could do that on their own or I can set them up with the Toptal designer who professionally built SEO Checkmark. Outside of that, though, marketing is really all that it needs to take off.

This is an upstart business, why are you selling now?

Two reasons—number one, I never really had plans for this to be a business in the first place. I genuinely built it to enhance the quality of the writing I produce. However, as I see that it is something that can really benefit so many people, I don’t want to keep it all to myself. Number two—my time is limited through the military commitments and my other jobs. I have the time to push it very slowly, but I think what it really needs is someone with some marketing expertise that can give it the turbo boost it needs.

What key strengths would a new owner need to take this product and see it flourish?

The most important strength a new owner would need is an understanding of the target market. It’s easy for someone who is advanced at SEO to look at the simplicity of the product (though it’s really not that simple behind the scenes) and dismiss it. However, SEO companies that target advanced SEO people severely limit their market. This product goes after business owners that want to write for their company, writers who want to take on clients who want SEO work, agencies that want help standardizing across their writers—it’s a much wider segment. I think a new owner that can see that and knows how to market towards that demographic could be wildly successful.

If you were to keep this product and turn it into a full scale business, what would be the first few items on your own to-do list?

Marketing, Marketing, Marketing. It’s ready to roll. It just needs someone with an ability to push it out to the right people. I’d probably look at someone with established channels or a firm understanding of things like social media marketing. Again, that’s not my area of expertise, but I know someone strong there can run with this.
