Seller's Notes

Site Overview

After growing tired of spending 100s of dollars a month on web scrapers and SEO software, I decided to create my own.  I created Octatools.com to help others in my same situation.  The site offers over 25 free web tools and a premium tool that provides email/social/whois lookups.  I developed the front end of the website and worked with a programmer to create the web crawler.

You don't need to have programming experience or a strong development background to run this business.

Monetization

The website is currently set up so users can purchase an annual or monthly subscription.  Once the user signs up, they are automatically billed according to their billing cycle.  The entire process is turnkey and doesn’t require you as the owner to be involved in anyway.

The Technology:

  • Braintreee Payments
  • Paid Memberships Pro
  • Wordpress
  • Apache
  • PHP
  • Javascript (jQuery, Modernizr, etc.)
  • Get Response
  • Media Temple

Keywords Ranking On First Page of Google:

Over 100 relevant keyword phrases ranking on the first page of Google.  Below are just a few of those keywords:

  • free social media scraper
  • scrape email addresses from websites free
  • social scraper
  • free email scraper
  • email scraper free
  • social media scraper
  • email address scraper
  • free email scraper tool
  • scrape social media
  • email scraping tool
  • scrape email
  • email scrapers
  • email scraping tools
  • scrape email addresses

The Day-to Day Involvement:

There is currently no day-to-day involvement since everything is turn-key and I’m not actively marketing the site.  This will naturally change if you are trying to grow this business.

Previous Marketing:

Aside from creating blog posts, which hasn’t been done in a very long time, there has been no previous marketing to-date.

Reason For Sale:

I’m no longer interested in building or growing this software.  I have other projects I’m focused on and instead of letting it coast along, I’d rather give someone the opportunity to make money off what I started.

Recommendations For Improvement:

On-going content creation: Create relevant blog posts on a monthly basis to drive more users to the website.  These users can either convert or get them in the funnel through an ebook, downloadable media, etc.

Off-site guest posting: Guest post on third party sites and show expertise around SEO, digital marketing, or web scraping.  There is huge potential to write posts and drive people back to the site.

Paid advertisements: Running Facebook ads, twitter ads, content networks (i.e. Outbrain), or direct paid placements will drive more users to the site.  There is no overhead associated with the site so profit is easily achieved.

Collaborations and strategic partnerships: Leverage other marketers to help cross promote Octatools by finding someone with web traffic or expertise in a related niche.

Create an API for the tool: There have been requests in the past to open up an API for the tool, but I haven’t had the time to do it.  Opening up an API would increase revenue and value for the tool.

Connect to other popular APIs to make the tool better: There are many APIs like MOZ, aHrefs, LinkResearchTools, WHOis, etc. that can provide additional data to increase the functionality of the tool.  Some are free while others have a usage cost.

The Perfect Opportunity For The Following People…

  • A skilled marketer who is looking for a product to start selling immediately
  • A programmer who is looking for a base of code to build on top of
  • An investor who has money to invest in ads/resources to grow the business
  • Anyone looking for independence and to be their own boss

What’s Included In The Sale:

  • Domain octatools.com = 2 years old
  • Get Response subscribers = 789
  • Octatools social media accounts: Facebook = 35,000 Likes & Twitter = 896 Followers
  • Google Analytics and Google Webmaster Tools
  • All custom code (PHP, MYSQL, JQUERY, etc.)
  • All custom MYSQL database information (names, emails, urls, etc.)
  • Wordpress core (plugins, theme, etc.)

** Please note, I don’t want to retain ownership of anything.  If I missed listing something above, that’s yours as well!

Post-Sale Transition

After the sale has occurred I will work with you to transition all files and accounts accordingly.   I’m willing to offer my time at an affordable hourly rate to help you if needed.

Not enough room, more jobs to add?

The website currently functions as is, but if someone wanted to improve the current tools they would need to be a programmer or hire one.

Does the owner need specific skillsets in order to successfully operate the site?

Someone familiar with Wordpress and an understanding of marketing would do well.

Do you and/or any employees or freelancers provide customer support?

Yes

How is customer support handled and what is the average volume?

Ticketing system through a users account.  It's about 1 request every 2 weeks.

Please identify and briefly describe your main competitors (1-3 is fine)

https://hunter.io/ = Email addresses only and very expensive
2. http://www.scrapebox.com/email-scraper = Very robust SEO tool that offers many options, but is confusing for non-technical users
3. https://emailextractorpro.com/ = A desktop software that scrapes email addresses only

What makes your website better than its competition?

Octatools offers an affordable alternative to the overpriced solutions on the market.  Most options available are either desktop software, which only run on PC and are risky to install.  These usually average about $99 one-time fee.  The other options are expensive subscriptions ranging from $99 - $1,000s.  Octatools is simple, effective, and homegrown.

Overview of product/service pricing and how it has evolved over the last 12 months

I haven't evolved or modified the pricing at all.  The current pricing is as follows:
1. $8.49/month
2. $24.99 / year

There is the ability to increase the price or make additional tiers, but I haven't spent any time to work on that.

What is the site's average Refund/Chargeback rate over the trailing twelve months?

11% - I think

What is the primary reason for refund requests?

I don't fight users on refunds so if a user has an issue with the tool or isn't happy with the results I just offer a refund. It's easier that way for me and users have the ability to fight the charge with the bank which is much more of a headache as opposed to simply giving the refund. In the two years I've been running Octatools, I've actually only had about 5 people say they want a refund.

What is the primary reason for refund requests?

Same as above

What is the approximate breakdown of clients by different price levels?

60 % monthly
40 % annually

What programming language is the website’s product created in?

PHP and jQuery

Does the product require constant updating?

No

Please explain your update process and an overview of the key product improvements you've released over the trailing twelve months (TTM).

Most of the work was complete prior to the last 12 months.  The only main update over the last twelve months was switching the entire site over to SSL as opposed to just the check out pages.

When was the last time the source code was updated?

Jan 2017

Please provide a brief overview of each related site that you own below

I only own octatools.com

Are you willing to sign a 3-year non-compete contract in the industry that the website operates in?

Yes, I am.

Will you provide 1-3 months of post-sale support & training, in order to ensure that the buyer is able to fully take over the business and its operations?

This is negotiable.

What are the primary growth opportunities for the business going forward?

Are there any geographical limitations to the potential buyer of the business?

No, there are no geographic limitations.

I'm from the UK, so would have to handle the EU VAT issues, which is a minefield with digital services (EU MOSS).

I have to ask - how were you able to grow so much traffic, social media followers, and organic rankings within just a year?

@daniel7rusu The tool doesn't use any APIs to function. It was developed by me. There is an opportunity to create an API for the tool which others have asked for, but I haven't had a chance to do it yet. There is also an opportunity to increase the functionality of the scraper by plugging into pre-existing APIs, but again, I haven't done that.

Before setting up Octatools.com I had a previous desktop version of the tool called Email Extractor Online. I shut that down to make an online version. When doing that I redirected the traffic which provided a good boost and some other legacy blog posts from other sites that I redirected a few years ago. Due to on-page optimization and some basic guest posting the site ranks really well for almost any phrases related to email scraping in Google SERPs. I haven't been aggressive in marketing as I mentioned due to limited time on my end. As for social media followers, I just have a Facebook Like ad running which is getting likes for $.07.

If you have more specific questions please PM me.

Thanks!

@bealers Hi thanks for the comment/question. As mentioned in the listing, I offer satisfaction guaranteed and don't fight people on refund requests. Nothing changed with the software that resulted in those refunds. (You may be aware, but charge backs are different and result when the user calls their bank. I've only had 2-3 of those since I set up the site). Unfortunately, the highest month of refunds happened to be the month I decided to list it on Flippa (not smart on my part). If you look in the P&L you will see the refunds per month which are very minimal.

I really want to like this site but it's an odd hodgepodge of disparate tools smushed together and called an SEO tool. I tried some of the tools to mixed results. The SEO script passes my sniff test as a homebrew which returns on-page analytics one at a time. Seems reasonable, but not very compelling given what the rest of the internet has to offer. The social profile tool was super hit and miss depending on what people chose to throw into their various profiles.

So we come to what seems to be the main event: the email extraction engine. I played with it and it works fine. It's a bit tedious to find pages to toss in for extraction, but that takes less programming and infrastructure than a competitor like Hunter.io (from the Seller's Notes). The question is: does the market want to self-service hunt for pages to extract from at a discount, or pay a premium for a more robust tool like Hunter?

The financials it would seem there's some sort of market for it, though it feels a bit soft at $300/mo. It will be up to the new owner to see if this is a pure marketing play (sell the heck out of it) or a development + marketing play (improve the tools, reposition the content based on what people are most interested in paying for, and then market the heck out of it). Personally I think it's the latter. I think the site could use an editorial facelift, to emphasize the main tool(s) people value, and de-emphasize the sea of "nice that they're part of the package" tools.

All the best on your auction... I'll be watching it. Cheers

Michael, I looked around your site to find out more about you and stumbled on this:

It's a bit concerning that the next owner of OctaTools could easily find themselves in the same predicament. I'm wondering what reassurances can be provided?

@open4biz Seeing as you read the post, you are privy to the specifics of the situation. It seemed to be a one time scrub by Linkedin as there are 100s of companies listed on Linkedin to-date that all offer data scraping related services. I personally think it's unlikely that the new owner would have any issues, but I'm not the one running the show at over there. I would like to note there were some others who had Octatools on their profile and those people had no issues.

@open4biz Thanks for the detailed write up and your thoughts. I'm glad you took the time to test out the tools and give some insight for others to read.

Hunter.io is by far the best tool I've ever used for email scraping and providing that type of information. In fact, I'm not even sure how they are able to access the data the way they do. Octatools was never created to compete with a tool of that caliber. One day maybe, but what I'm selling is more catered to DIY marketers who need an affordable way to scrape some emails and social profiles.

You are correct in that there are other tools on the market. However, the Internet is a big a place. As mentioned in the listing, without doing much marketing, especially over the last year, I've managed to acquire customers regularly. I'm hoping the buyer can take what I've built and run with it to make it whatever they want it to be.

Feel free to PM if you have more specific questions and I'll be happy to answer.

Cheers!

Hi,

Looking on your website it's pretty much build using a bunch of free API where is the value? Also in regards to your website scanning you not doing a deep scan correct and are you using a free api or there is subscription? Love your work but still needs work on website redesign etc.. Now where you coming with your price as your numbers don't justify such a steep price.

Best,

Good answer on the LinkedIn issue.

RE: "...I'm not even sure how they are able to access the data the way they do."

Hunter is using a webcrawler to cache the internet and return results. Such a thing can be rather expensive to create so I'm guessing they use another crawler's API and query it by domain and return results when an email address is found on the page. Given the recurring costs of an API connection that would account for their monthly rate. Cheers

@joeyoungblood thanks for the message. When you received this error, did you try to plug in the URL for a specific facebook page? If so, that is most likely why you experienced an error.

The tool scrapes individual URLs and pull backs the social media profiles listed on that URL. It's not designed to scrape Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, etc. The proper way to access that type of data would be to use API access for those specific services, but that is something I haven't done at this moment. You could definitely further evolve the tool to include that functionality.

I hope that helps clarify.
