Everything is already finished. Additional content for the future buyer could be:

  • Adding niche related blog posts
  • Uploading new products and suppliers

Task 1 - Processing orders through Shopify backend then forwarding to corresponding supplier.

Task 2 - Responding to the occasional customer email and/or phone call.

Who - Owner
Hours per week - 2 (max)
How may people perform this task? - 1

Does the owner need specific skillsets in order to successfully operate the site?

No. Shopify is designed for anyone to be able to use with confidence. The ability to use email and a phone are the only other skills needed.

Yes.

How is customer support handled and what is the average volume?

This is very minimal, maybe 3 or 4 emails per week. 2-4 phone calls per week.

Please identify and briefly describe your main competitors

This niche is really open for dominating. All other competitors have very outdated websites and are coasting on their time in the business. With a little effort, this website could be established as the dominant authority in this niche before long.

What makes your website better than its competition?

Design and functionality of the website far exceeds 90% of competitors sites. No other competitor uses video in there about us and selected product pages. With effort in regards to regular use of social media, email marketing, blogging and follow up sales calls - this business could easily dominate in this niche.

My heart has just personally not been in it, due to focus placed in other businesses.

No. But further discounts on pricing can be negotiated on larger orders.

Have you changed suppliers in the past?

No

Are you willing to sign a 3-year non-compete contract in the industry that the website operates in?

Yes, I am.

Will you provide 1-3 months of post-sale support & training?

Yes

What are the primary growth opportunities for the business going forward?

Sales can be greatly increased with minimal effort. I have been very passive with this business once I got it steadily doing sales. An owner willing to chase up leads, call abandoned checkouts, be active within the social media community, incorporate email marketing and create blog content once or twice per month - would drastically improve the revenue of this business in a very short time.

Are there any geographical limitations to the potential buyer of the business?

No, there are no geographic limitations. This business can be run and operated from your lap top or cell phone anywhere in the world (as long as you have an internet connection).

What is the breakdown in expense for the last 3 months?

Cost of goods sold, shipping, google adwords.

Beyond these 3 expenses there are minimal costs including: Shopify monthly fee and a few paid Shopify apps.

For those who are new to shopify and reading the backend financials: The Sales box list all sales information for that month. The 'Payments' however does NOT indicate expenses. Payments is the total revenue that each of those payment processors (Shopify, Amazon, Paypal) have deposited into the business account.

The reason for the difference between these numbers (revenue-payments) is because of the payout schedule of these processors. For example: If a sale is made on Jan 30th, that sale will be listed as revenue for the month of January. However, if the payment isn't fully processed and posted to the business account until Feb 2nd, then the 'Payment' will appear in the February financials breakdown.

I hope this helps :)

@dlap Thank you. Great question. There has actually never been a return. Shopify just lists all cancelled orders as returns. Order cancellations have been a result of products being out of stock at certain times. Customers in this niche a usually okay with waiting up to 1 month to receive their product if an item is on backorder. All listed 'returns' are actually scenarios where customers have been unwilling to wait for backordered products and so cancelled the order before it was shipped.

Take a look at the shipping and returns policy on the website and you will see that the business is thoroughly covered in the event of an actual return.

Hi nice listing, looking at your adword's numbers appears you reach a median .40$ cpc; wondering:
the median cost x customer acquisition ( so how many of those .40$ become paying customers) ;
if thise .40$ converts in a kind of lead generation to be nurtured in future;
if do apply some kind of retargeting for not converting visitors.
thanks and best of luck with this listing G

Hi Leigh,

the business (&site) looks good, however please comment on the following issues:

There are high variations in the main components of CoGS.

Direct Cost of Goods vary from 42% of Gross Revenue in July'16 to 67% in February'17 (that is why in February the Net Profit ratio was only 4%).

Shipping and handling vary from 12% in Sep'16 (I didn't consider the 9% in March, as this was a special month) to 30% in Aug'16. This seem to be the main cost variation which drove the Net Profit ratio in Jan'17 to only 7%

Such variations could easily throw the bottom line in the red zone (as these costs together account for 80% of the Gross Revenue, in the last 6 month average - excluding March'17).

Besides commenting on the cause of such variations, please let me (us) know if you can proof that all expenses were well taken into account.

Good luck!

Thu, 27 Apr 2017 08:40:18 AEST

@tibi01 Sure I'd be happy to address this.

The profit margin varies not only from supplier to supplier, but also cage to cage. However, the biggest contributing factor to this month to month difference is shipping. Shipping costs on each order differs drastically depending on size/weight of the cage (most ship freight) and also the distance. For example: A walk in aviary from A&E (which ships out of New Jersey) being shipped to a customer in California can cost up to $300 in shipping. However, if this same cage ships to New Jersey or the next state over, shipping can be $100 or so.

The other big factor is cages per order. If a customer orders multiple cages, the shipping costs are greatly reduced as they ship on the same truck.

Id like to note that I have never had a month that ran at a loss. Some months ive had a lot of orders from CA, so the margins where slimmer but never in 'the red zone'.

I am happy to do video walk throughs to prove income and expenses with serious buyers. I have listed all the costs associated with running the business that apply to the buyer. I have used this business to help fund other business of mine, but those expenses are unrelated to My Birds House.

I hope this answered your questions. Let me know if you have others or would like more clarification.

Leigh

Hi!
I just have few questions in relation to your Adwords activities. Judging by the adwords activity screenshot, you're running shopping and remarketing campaigns, both averaging aprox. 14$ per conversion and they are limited by daily budgets.

Could you please explain the reason why are you limiting investments in adwords while it brings you CPA of 15$ while average order value is 500$ ?
Just curious :)

Thanks!

@pvoland Great question!

And the simple answer is, I haven't been giving this business much attention since I got it up and running. I've taken a very passive approach and because of this, have likely neglected many opportunities to increase revenue. Once I got this business up and running, I almost immediately started focusing on new businesses.

Long story short, a buyer who is excited to put a little effort into growing this business is likely to yield much better results than what I have displayed.

Hope this answers your question.

@faythlen great question, thanks!

The adwords campaigns and settings that are currently in place will be transfered to the new owner if they want to keep things the way they are.

This is a simple process of copying the campains from the existing account and then uploading them to the buyers account.

The entire google account does not need to be transferred to get this result.

I hope this was helpful!

@pvoland its not lack of time, more lack of interest. This is not my only business, nor is it a main focus for me these days. Its not quite as simple as just increasing budget, tracking data and split testing is the best way to optimize paid advertising campaigns. This takes time, patience and attention to do it right and do it well. The new owner will do well if they are excited to take the time to focus on this.

@pvoland The business has it's own google account, totally separate from my personal accounts. Switching ownership is a matter of changing account details to suit the owner and providing login information.

Also, take the adwords conversion data in that screenshot with a grain of salt. That screenshot was to display the total adspend since day 1 of the business. However, I did not have the conversion tracking codes correctly installed in the beginning. I had a support session with google a few months later to get everything set up correctly.

I will upload screenshots of March and April 2017 adwords data. This is much more accurate.

Mon, 01 May 2017 06:42:56 AEST

@roman1k The only websites that are actually selling the same products for slightly less are big box stores such as Wayfair, Amazon etc. These I do not classify as compeditors, the reason is that this website targets passionate bird owners who want to buy from niche specific website. This entire business model is designed to appeal to customers who want to buy from a store that appears to have a specialized knowledge in that particular area.

Other websites (that I've come across) list these cages for less but are not legitimate websites. They are either out of business, fake or have not been approved with those suppliers. I know this because I asked my suppliers when I first found these other websites.

My main suppliers products prices are protected by MAP policy (minimum advertised price)

It is possible for niche websites, who have warehousing capabilities, to buy in bulk from the suppliers at a discount, and potentially negotiate lower sales prices. But that is a different business model all together.

Hope this answered your question.

Please don't take this as being pessimistic or antagonistic, but it seems there is quite a bit of competition from places like Amazon, Hayneedle, Wayfair, PetSmart, etc... Also you are not in the first 10 pages of a google search. But yet you are clearly selling in spite of all of that. What is your feeling on all of the competitors in this niche? Is your product offer different in some way? Do you feel that free shipping entices more customers to buy?

Just out of curiosity...why aren't you bidding (Adwords) on major keywords like AFRICAN GREY PARROT CAGES, MACAW BIRD CAGES, COCKATOO CAGES, or BABY COCKATIEL BIRDS FOR SALE??? I don't even see any organic results for those keywords.

Also it seems like Amazon, eBay, PETCO and Walmart are coming up on 1st page for major keywords - do you see that these major players are hurting traffic/sales?

@ironcherry my strategy has been to target customers at the very bottom of the sales funnel. Showing for specific buying terms such as SKU# and cage model number etc. And once again, the adwords strategy has not been updated in quite a while, so there is obviously a lot of room for improvement.

As for organic results. I have put almost no effort into SEO. The new owner could easily show up for keywords like the ones you mentioned with some basic and regular blog posts on the website.

1) what is the average sale size as you have mentioned sales range between $450 ~ $4500.
2) is it possible to replace drop shipper by stocking the inventory?

@viaseung average sale size is $900. Yes, if you have warehousing or a store front and are able to purchase inventory, you could replace dropshipping.
