Seller's Notes

I am selling an Ecommerce site based on BigCommerce specializing in Motorized Scooters.  This site has been recently updated and its looking good.  The site has excellent search engine results and continues to drive sales with minimal marketing input on owners part.

The sale includes Facebook and Youtube accounts that are not really being used.  Leads from these sources convert well but we have not had the time/skill to properly use them.

We will train as much as you need for the first couple weeks (It's a pretty simple business).  Then after that time we will of course answer any questions as they come up.

I am selling because I am moving overseas with my full-time job and won't have time for the site like I should.  It requires about 10hrs a week and phone availability during normal hours.  I am currently using a call center for inbound calls but I feel sales and service is best done directly!

It has been an easy little money maker that is fun at the same time.  We also have some bulk purchasers in place that we will gladly hand over to new owner.

Let me know if you have any questions.

How is your business monetized?

  • 3-4 Phone calls a day.
  • 5-10 Emails per day.

Please identify and briefly describe your main competitors

Other online scooters stores either selling Tao Tao or competing scooter brands.

What makes your website better than its competition?

We make our site easy to use, clean, and responsive to customer service inquiries and issues.  We recently started using a call center that answers all calls promptly.  This has helped free up time from inbound calls and also provides more reliable consistent customer service.

Many of our competitors have sites that are overwhelming in design and lack responsive customer service. We also can run and maintain sales on organic traffic alone.

Does the business store physical inventory?

No

Where is the business’s inventory kept?

We dropship from Manufacturer

How are shipments into and out of the warehouse / storage units managed?

Via email and occasional phone calls with our dedicated Sales Representative at Manufacturer who also handles all shipping logistics.

1 supplier Tao Tao over 10 years.

Does the business benefit from volume pricing arrangements with its suppliers?

Yes

Please explain which types of volume pricing the business benefits from

We buy at dealer wholesale.

Do you have written agreements in place with your suppliers

Yes

Are these agreements transferable to the new owner? Please explain

Yes

How often and through which channels do you pay suppliers for purchased goods?

Pay for bikes as orders come in. They prefer we use Chase QuickPay.  It is fast and free.  Only drawback is during busy months you are limited to $5,000 a day via quick pay so occasional wire transfers are used.

What is the average lead time from the order date until customer receives the good?

Depending on a few factors as short as 3 days up to 8 business days.  We ship via long haul trucking companies so some locations take a little time. Tracking is provided for all shipments.

Explain your payment terms with your supplier(s)?

Payment upon ordering. They have offered billing options but this way seems easier to track.

Have you changed suppliers in the past?

Yes

Please explain the circumstances for changing suppliers

We have added and dropped product lines in the past. Lately we are focusing on our main sellers and plan to slowly reintroduce old suppliers back in.

Are you willing to sign a 3-year non-compete contract in the industry that the website operates in?

Yes, I am.

Will you provide 1-3 months of post-sale support & training, in order to ensure that the buyer is able to fully take over the business and its operations?

Yes

What are the primary growth opportunities for the business going forward?

We have recently been adding ancillary items at checkout and this has proved popular  (rush shipping upcharge). We believe that adding other add on products will work well such as, helmets, oil, spark plugs etc.

We are in the beginning of starting to go after more fleet sales.  This could be a good opportunity. We currently have a BOys and Girls Club in TN that has ordered 12 bikes, is placing an order this week for 25 more and plans on up to 150.

Also the ability to add to product line up through adding suppliers and product lines will drive sales in the future.

Are there any geographical limitations to the potential buyer of the business?

No, there are no geographic limitations.

How much do you spend on marketing?

Noavatar

Sat, 18 Mar 2017 06:05:17 AEDT

@skishore23 You can see better in the Profit Loss Statement attached above under advertising but I spent about $1700 last year (mostly at Christmas) on Ad Words. The conversion rate was very low. It was my first use of Ad Words and have since cut way back to roughly $10-$20 a month to feel like I'm doing something.

The business has existed a long time but you only recently purchased. I assume that when you purchased you looked at prior performance. Can you say how the website was doing in prior years especially 2015?

Couple questions....
1. How does the title work? Where do you get it from and what paper work is involved?
2. Does your drop shipper handle shipping or do you arrange that? Is this marked up?
3. What is your profit margin per scooter?

@blakereed
Good Questions:
1. Registration paperwork it sent to us via Manufacturer. We then fill out and send to buyers.
2. Shipping is included in purchase prices and handled by supplier.
3. Most the margins can be worked out from numbers above and the Profit Loss sheet with more detail then I can go into here.

What happened to sales in Sept. and Oct? Also, do you notice this being a seasonal business with the majority of sales coming in summer/spring?

Hi Martin, can you please speak to why this has been relisted 9 times? Was it a poor fit with the buyer, too low a sale price, or something else? Thanks

@dylansenters Yes, this is a seasonal business. Sales slow going into winter, pick up again for holidays and then slow a bit before strong spring and summer. Also the mix of Kart and ATVs to scooters changes with the seasons.

@Maxwell I don't know about the majority of those listings 4 years ago and why it did not sell at auction. I only know about myself and the previous owners transaction. I do know a lot of work has gone into turning the site around (Design and Customer Service) in the past 2 years.

@deanzulj You can sell them for whatever you want. We have changed prices on items a few times... That said you can only charge what people will pay.

How do you process returns?

Noavatar

Mon, 20 Mar 2017 13:35:28 AEDT

@blakereed .... Great question. Honestly out of our approximately 500 sales last year we had an extremely small amount of returns with no damage, 2 to be exact. 1... They lived near a warehouse and just brought it back... 2. We had an error in product on the website product description due to bad information so we helped ship it back. Besides that returns are very limited. In addition last year we had 5 bikes that got mangled in transit. For those we file a claim with manufacturer, they file with shipper. it gets returned and a new one ships out.

Hello,
Interesting business. I just have one question: is the buyer expected to have a retail location already established with an in-house repair person, as specified in the TaoTao dealer agreement?

@thinksmart12 That's an important question.... OUr dealer agreement is fully transferable with Tao Tao. We have a great relationship with them. For your own success having someone to answer technical questions is always a sound business decision.

Small world, I purchased a scooter from this site years ago. Very easy purchase and registration process. I had a few assemble process questions, but without videos to watch was kind of difficult to put the scooter together. When I need repairs, I looked for a local repair shop. I would advise the new owner to create a youtube channel with how to assemble videos. I'd buy from these guys a 2nd time if I needed a scooter.

@martinlett - I don't think your answer to thinksmart12 was clear to me. So please answer this question with a yes or no: Does the buyer need to have a physical retail location with a repair person per the tao tao agreement? (note this is different than just having someone who can answer repair questions over the phone remotely).
