Description of App

First Call is a mobile subscription service to help consumers discover New York City’s best bars and save by getting your first drink on the house.

Deciding where to go for drinks is never easy. First Call is here to put an end to that:

  • First Call members get their first drink included at any bar in our network (70+ venue partners).

  • Members can go to each venue once a day and a new venue every 2 hours.

  • We have a vetted selection of New York’s finest bars for every occasion. From wine bars to sports bars to cocktail bars and lounges; whatever you'd like to do, we have the bar for you.

  • Members currently pay $25 a month for the benefit.

The app is available on the App Store and Google play and has been download over 12,000 times with over 200 current subscribers.

Background

Development

The app has been created in cordova/ionic  from the ground up and has been integrated with 3rd party plugins including Contentful for CMS, Zendesk for email, Mixpanel for user analytics and a parse clone for the database.

Current Operation

Current costs are about $200 per month.

There are currently 70+ venues within the network. All partners have agreed to partnership by signing an agreement (the buyer will receive the template contract).

Monetization

Members pay $25 per month for the benefits included in the service.  There are legacy customers on cheaper plans and the current ARPU is $17 per month.  We’ve set up a referral system that allows any member to refer a friend for a first month of $5 and as a benefit that member will receive their next month for $5.

The venues provide the benefit for no charge to us, per the agreements that we have signed with them.

Why is the app being sold?

First Call needs to be continually updated on all platforms.  The current founders have decided to split ways and pursue other opportunities, neither of which has the time to maintain or expand the current service of the app. Main needs for the app to continue/grow would be marketing, sales (for new venues) and minimal customer service (<20 emails per month).

What is included in the sale?

Included in the sale would be all rights to the code, design and First Call brand.  We’ll also provide all agreements with venues, rights to 3rd party plugins, and sales (venue acquisition) strategy documents.

Future Opportunities

Growth

There is the possibility of expanding the app beyond the New York market, as the service is easily transferrable.

The app is built to eventually allow for tracking of specific drinks ordered by users that could be used to partner with beverage companies as well as the venues.

Marketing

We found the most success marketing the service over social media  (Instagram was particularly successful) and average a return of 2.5x per user.

Post-Sale

What support will be provided post-sale?

We’ll provide 30 days of post-sale support.

@pandora2000 Its subscription based. Its only in NYC. People pay a monthly subscription of $25 to get a free drink at each bar we have in NYC. Have over 70 bars in NYC signed up. Would take spending money on advertising to grow revenue.

Noavatar

@WarriorKing We stopped advertising so our user base of subscriptions is not growing as quickly as people are cancelling we are seeing about a 2.5 return on advertising expenditures but you would have to advertise to bring revenue back up.

@pandora2000 1.) Yes we use a CMS that would be included for you to manage drinks, the bars, the hours a bar is open, the images for the bars, the whole thing and its very easy drag and drop. It is using a company called contentful. 2.) Bars do not pay to be on the app and we do not pay the bars. Their cost is the drink they give our customers. We have legal contracts with each and every bar and will provide the new owner with the template agreement that we use as well.

How are the agreements with bars sold, in person or by email, phone? How much time will it take to add more bars and how was it originally done?

@managemysite mostly email and phone some in person. It takes time to get them to respond once they do it's fast. Adding bars all depends on our sales skills. It's pretty similar to trying to sell yelp or google ads

Hello, a few questions;

1] How does the venue receive the code to input on the user's device to receive the free beverages?
2] Does the app have an interface or user account type for the venue?
3] Would you be able to share your iTunes Connect and Google Play analytics reports, including the sales revenue?
4] When you sell the app, the current client agreements, the IP does that give the buyer exclusivity to global markets, and would you be willing to sign a non-compete contract?

In addition to my previous questions, I noticed that you had a negative review in the iTunes App Store from an eloquent user that experienced difficulties receiving the first free drink then cancelled the monthly membership, however claims that you kept charging him and that you haven't responded to his claim in a timely fashion. Is this an isolated incident or can the buyer of this expect multiple legal claims and cases where the App Store policies have been violated?

4) yes

@CeP he was refunded. He didn't finish cancellation procedure. When you cancel a pop up shows saying you have to answer an email that you auto receive to complete cancellation. He did not do that which is why he kept being billed. That was an isolated incident. As per a bar denying a drink it happens rarely based on staff (sometimes someone new doesn't know about the program) in these cases we usually give the user a credit off their next month then follow up with the venue to fix the problem. This solves the problem and doesn't happen often

Sounds like a great idea and clearly its been successful so far. I'm curious, what do the bars get out of it? $25/mo for a free drink EVERY DAY at a bar is crazy cheap if people took advantage of it every day then the bars would easily lose money on that customer.

Noavatar
User 3f891c1e ( new )
Mon, 20 Mar 2017 13:03:49 AEDT

@s0uvenir the bars job is to upsell (get them to buy food and more drinks and bring friends) all that revenue flows 100 percent to them.

@managemysite to get our first few venues we agreed to pay them in certain circumstances for the drinks. This was just to get started and is no longer practice. It comes to roughly 150 a month based on user redemption at the venues

@07surf an hour a week of time maybe answer customer service emails. Could be less, no maintence otherwise but you can build it up as much as you want. For your second question, yes easily it's built to be able to work anywhere the addresses and maps are relative to what you input

@nino40 can be scaled to other cities just about immediately, only thing i would change is the filter on the app, right now it just lists neighborhoods, id change it to cities to make it easier for users but this is a decision you could make.

@nino40 Hi Sorry just saw this. We have consulting with a lawyer that specializes in dealing with the ABC and she has signed off on our contracts and believes we will have no problem. We are not exchanging money with any of our partners and also the drinks are not technically free since the user is paying a monthly subscription. If you private message me I can share our contract that our lawyer devised with the venues to make us clear of this situation.
