Seller's Notes

Grim Coast launched in November 2015 as a coffee lifestyle brand selling our own roasts, lifestyle goods, and coffee subscriptions. It has been a side hobby business for over a year, but could easily become a full time business with the right owner. We have a large social media following already and all dropship roaster relationships are still in place to easy transition.

In the beginning of 2016 we had a lot of success with tshirts and other lifestyle goods. You can see the revenue spike from that. In April we put the brand into "autodrive" by automating social media posts and no longer put money into marketing efforts. The $600-$700 in revenue month-to-month you see through the remainder of 2016 is purely from the existing recurring subscription orders we had gained earlier in the year.

We have two roasters we used, one located in Oakland, CA, and another located in San Diego, CA. We exclusively used the San Diego roaster towards the end because their pricing is outstanding, including roasting, bagging, and drop shipping for us. We never had to package and ship coffee, it's taken care of with our roasting partner.

The store is ran on Shopify, and the subscriptions are managed through a plugin called Bold Recurring Orders and processed through Stripe payments. This sale will include the website, all existing customer data, and all social media accounts: Instagram (4.6k followers), Twitter (140 followers), and Facebook (227 followers). Ownership of store, domain, and social accounts will be transferred to the new owner.

I am selling Grim Coast because I no longer have time to run it on the side, but there is still value in the brand and all the followers/subscribers we've collected over the year.

I see a couple of options for how the transition can go:
1) You simply take over ownership of the store and other assets and I help you with the transition in relationship with our roasters.
2) If you're an existing coffee company who is interested in rebranding the website and accounts as your own, I'm more than happy to help you do that. I am a designer and engineer by trade and can make those changes easily.

Have questions? Shoot me a message!

Cheers

It appears everything is "sold out". Is this intentional?

Why 'grim coast?' Sounds bleak if not depressing and I hoped the website would explain the name but it left me hanging. Greetings from SD, by the way.

@open4biz Well, the brand did start off "Bleak". When we originally launched in Nov 2015 the brand was very dark and played on the contrast between beach lifestyle living and punk rock and tattoo lifestyles. We rebranded and went a bit softer on the imagery in April 2015. We both personally loved the name so, plus all the social media followers, we decided just to keep it. Hope that gives you the answer you were looking for! Cheers

What's your profit margin on the subscription and single bags of coffee. Including packaging and shipping.

Does the roasters also use the custom black box shown on your website?

Site looks awesome btw!

Also interested in learning more about margins and associated costs. Has any paid marketing ever been performed? Trying to figure out the reason for decline in the traffic in recent months.

@KGR @Fr3shY

Profit margins on the coffee is quite good. Between our 3 roasts, it averages out to around 80% profit margin. Across the 3 roasts it averages out to around $2.25 roasted/packaged per bag. We sell for $13 per bag.

Basic monthly operating costs (not including coffee) is hovering around $200 right now. That's mainly for all our web hosting, social media tools, and operational tools like quickbooks.

The spike in revenue you see around Feb/March is when we heavily promoted the brand through social media (2x post a day on both instagram and twitter) with new t-shirt merchandise that sold very well. After that, we got sucked back into our day jobs and begin posting rarely and the website basically went on autopilot until December when we paused all recurring subscriptions to prepare for transfering to new ownership.

Hope this info sheds some light on your questions!

Cheers
- Kyle

Thanks for that information. Could you break out the $200 of operating costs or provide a P&L statement (assuming you can pull from quickbooks)? Would be an interesting business if easy to cut costs and scale marketing efforts. Also, can you comment on paid marketing?

@Kimmyd We paused all recurring orders in December. From April up until then, the website was on "autopilot" with no promotion or growth initiatives. Because of my other projects, this turned into a side business that received little to no attention around Spring 2016.

@KGR No subscriptions are currently active. We paused all subscriptions in December. To be honest, I'd say that whoever takes this over will need to start over again on subscription customers. A couple (2-3) of existing subscribers might join again, but that's not a ton of revenue.

@suhb01 Since June 2016, maybe 3 hrs a month. When we were pushing the brand hard in Feb/March of 2015, probably around 20 hrs/wk

@trannam100 We paused all subscriptions in December to begin preparing for transition to new ownership. No time or growth efforts were spent on the business between June 2016 and now, thus the slow drop in subscriptions month over month.
