Drones are exploding and new drone pilots are made everyday. With the industry growing so fast, its becoming common to see more and more drone dealers entering the market. In addition to this, new drone technology is replacing older drone technology and pilots are upgrading their equipment frequently. Aside from eBay and maybe a few forums, there really isn’t a go-to place to sell your drone and drone gear. So I came up with the concept of DroneTrades.com at the end of april of this year, surprisingly the domain was still available on godaddy.
Up for sale is another one of my drone startups, DroneTrades.com. I originally intended to build a drone dealer directory but then after speaking with one of the dealers I realized that there would actually be a market for used gear and equipment. The dealer I spoke with told me that they get inquiries all the time from customers about trading in their used drone so I figured out a way to integrate a marketplace into the site. Drone dealers can create dealer profiles based on three subscriptions plans and drone pilots can create listings for their used gear or drones. The site is powered by the Listify directory theme and uses the WooCommerce subscriptions plugin, WP job manager paid listings plugin and wp job manager field editor. I created all of the logos and the pictures that are used were taken of me by my photographer friend. We used to actually take aerial pictures for real estate agents so you’ll also notice for example, the image of the property behind the call to action on the homepage is actually a picture we took a long time ago.
After I built the site, I compiled a list of authorized DJI dealers and compiled a contact list. I sent out an invitation to claim their profile and I was able to get 5 of the dealers to create accounts and one dealer even asked if we could partner up and cross promote each others services on our websites. They really like the idea because they said that drone pilots inquire if they can sell their drone, so my site actually provides even more value to their customers. I have a drone trades banner on their online store and I’ve given them a premium featured dealer subscription package for free. I’m also waiting on a banner from them to put in my footer. I will give the new owner of the site the details of the partnership.
Classified Listings: I’ve integrated the site with the WooCommerce Paid Listings plugin ($39 value), which allows for you to charge a fee per classified listing. You could also charge a fee for a featured classified listing. As of right now I have the classified listings set at free and $5 for a featured classified listing.
Subscriptions Packages: The site is integrated with the WooCommerce Subscriptions Plugin ($199 value) and is currently setup with three different customizable packages for drone dealers: Basic (free), Premium ($19) and Premium Featured ($29). You could add a yearly version of each plan with a discount or add another package and even change the profile fields if you have more ideas with the WP Job Manager Custom Field Editor Plugin ($29 Value). The new owner will simply need a paypal business account which is free. Here’s a list of the subscription packages and features: dronetrades.com/plans-and-pricing.
Affiliate program: Since the end users will be drone pilots looking to buy sell and trade used gear, it could work well to integrate an affiliate program and promote drone and drone accessories.
Banner ads: Ads could work well, personally however, I would lean in a direction away from banner ads, it just keeps the site clean and simple providing a better user experience.
Ideas for expansion:
Since I already have the directory populated with a few existing users and a partnership with a pretty big drone dealer you could actually start marketing to the end user at this point, (drone pilots looking to buy and sell their gear). I would run a few Facebook PPC campaigns, maybe start with something as simple as “looking to upgrade your rig? Sell your drone for cash”. I’d also explore instagram’s new ad platform, i’ve heard positive things about it. I also love the idea of sponsoring a drone/UAV podcast, in fact I think this route might be the biggest bang for your buck. You could start generating cash flow from day one. After you have some end user traffic and maybe a little buzz you could start following up with the initial dealer contacts I’ve made. I’ll be giving you an updated contact list of where each dealer stands with follow up, responses and notes. You could then start promoting the dealer subscription packages. I would contact the dealers and let them know that you have a site that could bring them more traffic and sales, would they be interested?

Why am I selling:
I’ve mentioned before in my previous Flippa listings that I've realized that I love the building and creative phase, it puts me in a flow state and I enjoy it. Its the next step: sales/marketing that I dislike the most, I honestly just don't enjoy making sales calls, sending emails and following up even though most entrepreneurs enjoy it the most. So essentially I've done the gritty work of building the entire site, writing the content along with creating the logos, icons and images so all that you would have to do to start generating sales immediately would be to update your paypal information in the woo commerce settings and start reaching out to the 4,845 clubs, venues and bars to claim their listings.
Plan For Transaction and Site Transfer:
We'll use Flippa's escrow service for the payment. I'll transfer the domain over to your registrar, after the domain has been transferred I'll migrate the wordpress site into your hosting account. I'll put all of the site files, plugin license keys, .psd files, contact .csv sheet, photos and the video tutorial into a google drive and share it with you. Once you have all of the files you'll release the funds.
