This site was launched in August 2014 and got a large amount of press within its first 24 hours of existence*. The day after launch we got 59,558 users and 264,789 pageviews. We've done zero to promote it or improve it since and it is ranked on Google for terms like "awesome baby name" (rank 1) "baby name" (page 3) and "baby name generator" (page 2).
It has made a small amount of money - something in the region of low $xxx since launch. One big mistake we made was choosing namecheap as a domain affiliate - they only pay out when new customers register names and because they have so many customers already we lost out on quite a few sales because of this.
This is a perfect project for someone who knows how to monetize traffic and climb the search results through SEO.
The site costs ~$80 a month to run. It's a Ruby on Rails site hosted on Heroku, which costs $64.50 per month right now. It also uses a Pusher subscription which costs $19 a month for me, but I run multiple sites off this. This could easily be reduced to $10-$20 a month by putting it all on one server on a platform like DigitalOcean.
The traffic is pretty consistent at around 5k-6k unique users and 20k-25k pageviews per month. Over 400k searches have been performed on the site. These are all logged if the data is of any interest.
