It's hard to miss all of the current buzz around "drones". They're everywhere, solving problems and providing tremendous value to a variety of different industries. The growth rate of new drone pilots is staggering and even more staggering is how many pilots are starting aerial photography/media companies. Real estate agents are hiring drone pilots to take aerial photographs and video of properties. Action sports professionals are hiring drone pilots to capture shots that were previously impossible. Law enforcement uses them for surveillance, farmers use drones to monitor crops, Hollywood uses them to capture stunning shots that not long ago would have costed thousands of dollars an hour.
Aerial Connect is a rare opportunity to tap into a new and growing industry. Someone with decent SEO or internet marketing skills will undoubtably do very well with this niche site.
Hey everyone, I want to start with a quick overview of my history and involvement in the "drone" or UAV industry as well as why and how the site idea came about.
In the winter of 2010 my partner and I saw a need in the real estate market for aerial photographs. We needed to find a way to fly a high end DSLR camera 50-100 feet up in the air. Over the next few months I learned everything I could about remote control UAV drones. I was able to learn how to engineer, build, test and operate an 8 foot aerial helicopter rig that was able to successfully carry our DSLR camera. Shortly after, we went on to take hundreds of aerial pictures for real estate agents. *All of the photos you see on the site are photos we took during our flights and are included in the sale.
In August of 2014 I saw how many aerial photography/drone companies were popping up. I knew eventually there will have to be a directory for the growing demand and that I should try and build one. So, with very little technological knowledge I built Aerial Connect by myself and took the site live in October. After the site went live I started making a list of drone operators. I browsed the #drone hashtag on Instagram and started reaching out to pilots, inviting them to make a free profile on the site. I sent emails to 27 drone pilots, got 9 users to create their own profiles and every one of them loved the idea. Just one email too, I never followed up with another email to pilots I never got responses from. I decided to just manually populate the directory with profiles, currently I have 103 profiles on the site, 9 of them of course are actual subscribed users. A cool feature is the "Claim listings" button, so it's easier for new user acquisition, (I'll go over some of my idea's for new user acquisition below).
Let me first highlight a really amazing benefit of working with the drone companies: they are very easy to get in contact with and you'll always be talking with the founder. A huge problem with other directory business models is that generating leads can be challenging. For example: if you're starting an attorney directory, getting in contact with an attorney is almost impossible, especially on the phone and you would be lucky if an email even gets opened.
-Paid memberships - I've setup the theme to be extremely easy to sell subscriptions. It's already setup with the WooCommerce paid listings plugin, $40 value.
-Banner ads - setup of this method is quite easy as well.
-Affiliate Marketing - This is unique. I thought about setting up a subscription plan that offered premium account features if the user agreed to sign up for promotional offers. There are dozens of amazing new drone related products you could send out on a weekly or biweekly email. This could be an interesting way to maximize value for your drone pilots and bring in revenue in the early stages.
Marketing Strategies and Ideas.
If I could continue to market the site, I'd start off by individually calling each and every drone pilot on the contact list. I would invite them to sign up for a free account or an early bird special promotion for a featured listing, price would be fair. (Convert 10% of those phone calls into $20 a month paid listings. $200 a month sounds good right?). After I got most of the drone pilots on board, I would create a contest, perhaps something like: "Best Aerial Photo" or "Best Aerial Video". The prize could be a cool drone tool like a toolbox or equipment travel case, get creative. All of the drone pilots would be encouraged to share the contest to have all of their friends/followers vote for their photo on the website. There's your traffic, good quality traffic too. Remember, can't just focus on the drone pilots but the end user traffic as well, (real estate agents, etc..), and I'm certain that all of the drone pilots would have real estate professionals as friends/followers. From here I would try to focus on the actual service of the website - connecting drone pilots with other professionals. When the website provides value you could expect organic growth to follow. Finding new aerial leads is very simple using instagram hashtags like #drone, #aerialphotography, #dji, #dronelife etc...
You could also contact real estate and drone podcasts, blogs or groups and inquire about advertising. (Aubrey Marcus, founder of Onnit said in an interview that advertising on podcasts was the most effective method of advertising by far.) If I were to spend money on advertising, I would definitely look into sponsoring podcasts before facebook ads or youtube ads.
On SEO - I used the Yoast plugin to optimize the site for SEO, I honestly know little to nothing about SEO, aside from just setting the ground work. Someone with experience could do great with this niche.
Technology Used - The site comes with the premium directory theme Listify by Astoundify, ($63 value). Its a stellar theme, very easy to use, looks incredible and has wonderful support. I've also purchased the woocommerce Paid Listings plugin, ($40 value), so you can start generating revenue from day one.

The Flippa Escrow sounds great, we'll use that. I've never transitioned website ownership but everything is hosted through godaddy, their support team is great so I'm not concerned about problems, we'll have a smooth transition.
Reason For Selling
A business directory is a two sided market and as a single founder with a job and another iOS app project in the works, there's no way for me to give the site the full attention it needs. It hurts to let this site go, mainly because I know that a drone pilot directory will have to exist in the market and I feel that this site could be the one. I know that someone else could easily take the groundwork I've built and shoot this concept down the runway and into the stratosphere.
Good luck and happy bidding!
