Auction Description

Launched in January 2011 by ourselves (two college students) was an overnight hit. The site has now grown to become not only a firmly established social network consistently achieving around 30 Million page views per month, but a well established business conistently generating $5,000 - $8,000 per month with mimimal effort. The site currently has high costs due to the servers we host on. However, this could be significantly reduced as we hold Snog on much larger servers than are necessary.

What is

Snog is a social network which aims to provide a fun, engaging, yet simple platform for meeting new and interesting people around you. Take a look at our TechCrunch article -

We have created a temporary account to allow for quick access to the site so you can take a look around. Although this will give you a good insight into how the site works, we would encourage you to also sign up yourself for a full, comprehensive overview (it only takes 20 seconds).

 The login details are: Email:
Pass: Temp123

Snog Features:

  • User profiles - Every user has their own profile. On this profile, the user can show their:
    • Photos - Pinterest style photo galleries with drag & drop functionality
    • Collected Answers
    • Statuses
    • Interests
    • ‘About me’ section
    • Activity Feed
    • Contact details
    • Verified profile - Shows the user is real. Profiles are verified by moderators / administrators in the admin section.
    • Customisable background on profile plus validation from the community (only available to verified members).

  • Real time live feed - Answers that are made between users are shown in the live feed
    • Top hourly users
    • Invite a friend game to help promote Snog

  • Inbox & notifications
    • User inbox is a real-time chat system
    • Notification based on answers, comments and follows

  • User & photo settings -
    • Update personal details
    • Notification preferences
    • Profile & email verification
    • Upload & manage photos
    • Customisable backgrounds

  • Interests - Selection of interests uploaded by Snog users. Users can:
    • Select which interests they like / dislike
    • Upload their own interests
    • Search interests
    • Comment on an interest profile

  • News feed - Updates from members that a user follows

  • Photos, profile updates & statuses from followed users
  • A user can answer and comment on each of these

  • Search - A user can specify their search criteria and find relevant members. Search by:
    • Age
    • Distance
    • Gender

  • iPhone App
    • A fully working iPhone app which corresponds directly with the website. The app has less functionality than the site but allows members to browse through a gallery of users and visit user profiles to answer them / send private messages.
    • When launched, the Snog app went straight into the top charts in the ‘Social Networking’ category, sitting at 6th above Twitter, Badoo, Google + and various others.
    • Unfortunately, after a month of being in the App Store, Apple removed our app from sale due to ‘inappropriate images’. This is a common stumbling block with social apps. To combat this we changed various parts of the app to model Instagram functionality as they have faced similar issues due to user generated content.
    • Changes meant members could now flag pictures, report profiles for inappropriate content, block profiles and submit feedback from the app.
    • We are yet to get back in the store but with a little more work we think this is achievable.

  • Android App
    • The android app is almost identical to the Snog iPhone app. The app is currently in the android marketplace.

Admin Backend
Snog has an advanced admin backend. Features include:

  • In-depth dashboard displaying data from the last 7 days in both graph & table formats:
    • Signups hourly / Daily
    • DAU hourly / Daily
    • MAU
    • DAU as % of MAU
    • Signup Origins
    • New visitors
    • Figures for all user actions (answers, pictures, comments etc)
    • Figures on all reports and suspensions
  • Monitor & edit user details & activity
  • Monitor & edit interests
  • Resolve & manage reports within the built in report centre
  • Facebook invite game results
    • View how many users a member has ‘enticed’
    • View how many users a member has ‘referred’
  • Create site announcements to display as banners and overlays
  • Further settings

Future Potential / Options

There are very few websites that have ever gained this traction amongst this audience. Snog has the attention of UK teens, making the possibilities for the future of Snog endless.

  • Work on getting the iPhone app back in the store. This obviously creates huge opportunities as the amount of exposure achieved whilst the app is in the ‘top charts’ is invaluable. As previously explained, when launched the iPhone app did extremely well.
  • Improve the android app by allowing for searches based on distance.
  • Introduce gamification and badges / levels. This could easily be implemented into Snog as the site is essentially a game in itself which logs a users answer stats. We’ve previously tested this with a special edition valentines game which was received very well and increased user engagement significantly. Gamification provides endless options for monetisation through both freemium and/or premium models.
  • Create a virtual economy for Snog users introducing virtual money / gifts. Again, this opens up endless avenues for monetisation and it is something we believe the Snog community would warm too.
  • Improve the search function, ultimately turning the site into more of a dating site. Although not our intention, Snog is a few small changes away from being a great platform for a dating site. The premise of Snog, Marry or Avoid immediately places the site into this category and with a bit of thought, a shift in this direction could yield great revenues.
  • Improve the interests section to provide more accurate search results. Interest data can also be used for targetted advertising.
  • Break into mainland Europe and USA. Snog is predominantly a UK based social network and is yet to significantly break into other territories. Having the Snog iPhone app in the top charts could help achieve this.

Reason for selling
We have various projects on the go and we do not have the necessary development time available to work on all projects at once. In saying that, Snog is relatively self sufficient at the moment and has not had any work done on it since May 2012 and still manages to run smoothly, attracting new members every day.

Running the site.

As previously mentioned, Snog requires very little time to run at the moment. The only hours put into Snog on a weekly basis is that of community management / customer service. However the majority of this is done by our community moderators who have access to the admin section.

Please see attached earnings reports. Adsense has only been on Snog since July. As we previously mentioned, there are also many other ways Snog could create revenue, not to mention reducing monthly hosting costs would make the site turn a good profit instantly.

    1) Why are server fees so high? Its obviously needed?

    2) How did you promote to the uk? Can the same be applied to other countries?

    3) Is this custom built? Or customized script?

    4) What is the main traffic source?

    5) Starting bid is for 42 months of profit.. 3.5 years to make investment back as it currently stands.

Ok I second that, why would you have expensive servers if they were not needed? Its like buying a car to get to the end of the street. When you could just walk... They must be required or did you think the traffic would have been 100x greater or something?

    Hi Guys,
    Thanks for the questions.
    1) Yes, the servers are bigger than necessary because we always wanted to be prepared for any surge in traffic (to put it simply we've been able to afford to do this, however this is not necessary for any potential buyer). The site is hosted on Amazon yet Snog could operate on a smaller set up.
    2) Promotion of Snog has been minimal. The investor behind Snog has a very strong domain network, Snog has been advertised on a few of these domains to little effect.

As the listing says the site is basically self sufficient, the initial site was built upon a very strong viral loop which brought in around 2-3k users per day, however once we started getting a lot of members we opted to create more value on the site, to do so we had to compromise the strong viral loop. The site still brings in 500 users per day consistently. We have never paid for advertising. Getting Snog to grow in other countries is indeed possible however as explained, we don't really have a blueprint for achieving this.
    3) The site is completely custom built using PHP.
    4) Traffic figures:

    * Direct traffic - 76%

    * Search Traffic - 22%

    * Referral Traffic - 6%
    5) The starting bid is low. If you read the full listing you would be aware of what is included. The Domain name is worth much more than the starting price itself, not to mention the value of the 400k users, the completely custom built advanced back end, the custom built iPhone / Android apps and a site which is consistently attracting 30M pageviews per month for almost 2 years with very significant engagement amongst users. Furthermore, any offer / bid on the site will consider future potential.
If you have any more questions, we'd be happy to answer.

How much more work and what would the estimate of the cost be to get the app working again on the app store? I would imagine it would be beneficial for the new owner to have a fully working app and this cost should be factored in when bidding.

The app is fully working. To get it back into the app store is completely at Apple's discretion. We have tried to re-submit a couple of times, however it has been removed for inappropriate images.
We have added a photo verification system to help combat this. For the buyer to get the app back in, it may require working with Apple to meet their requirements. We cannot specifically say how much time this would take as we do not know.

    Thanks for the questions guys.
The server costs are around $3k per month plus $2k for the database server. However, as mentioned in the listing, we are running at a higher capacity than necessary and this cost could be reduced.
Yes, is included in the listing.
We have had no legal issues with that tv programme, we have substantially differentiated ourselves.

    Great site.
    - Did you guys to the design and development yourself? If not, would you be willing to pass on the contractor details so they could be hired for extra work?
    - How much do you think the hosting costs could be reduced by? What is a suitable plan?
    - What changes do you think (going by other dating apps) need to be made in order to get the snog app approved? It's strange that they've rejected it so many times
    - What measures are in place to combat PM spam? I see that the test Flippa account already has a spam message

    Thanks for the questions.
    - Yes all website design and development has been done in house. Unfortunately we will not be continuing work on Snog once sold, however we can assist with the transition and provide some support (answer questions etc) for a period post sale. The design and development of the apps was outsourced. We can provide their details.
    - On our current Amazon set up they could be reduced by a couple hundred dollars / month, however they could be reduced significantly by moving to a smaller server though the code would need to be adapted in order for the site to run smoothly. We will try to gather a more in depth answer for you once we have spoken to our devs.
    - It's hard to say as the acceptance of any iOS application is at the discretion of Apple. We have made significant changes including the approval of every picture before it gets uploaded. The last time we submitted to Apple we received an email saying the app was going through a multi stage review process. That was in May. In saying that, we had the original Snog iOS app in the store for almost a month without any photo verification at all, it seems getting into the App Store is somewhat based on luck!
    - Spam has never been a big issue on Snog. Any major spam we have had (minimal) has been dealt with by banning specific IP's. We have a selection of community moderators who report spam to us so it can be dealt with. As you can see, the spam account who sent the message to the Flippa Guest account has already been suspended / removed.
If you require any further assistance please do not hesitate to ask.

    The code is very different.
