Biology Online is a unique niche website. Today it has grown to be the largest biology community on the web. Unfortunately due to other commitments we have not been able to dedicate much time to this project. We have not touched it for over a year now and thus decided that it’s time for it to find its new home that will hopefully enable it to improve and benefit the academic community worldwide.

For a long time the website has been running virtually on its own with a help of one offshore content moderator (biology teacher/researcher), who’s been with us for 4 years and takes care of:
* Content validity/additions in the dictionary
* Forum administrations/moderation/support (actively participates in discussions)
All the other moderators are non-paid community members that volunteered to help. They are managed by our main moderator. We simply get a report every few days on what’s been done.

Some technical info:

Hosting and general site maintenance:

  1. DNS is managed by: Cloudflare, Cloudflare also provides out of the box cdn, dos protection and basic failover
  2. Hosting is managed by SoftLayer (in need of an upgrade), server specs:
Dual Intel Xeon 5430 (8 CPU in total)
    4GB of RAM
    2x250GB RAID 1 HDD
  3. Site management is done with cPanel (PHP, Apache, MySQL).
  4. Software:
Slightly customized version of phpBB3 runs the forum and the basic user authentication across the whole site.
The code is well written and optimized.
The dictionary is powered by MediaWiki (slightly modified to fit our specific needs) and integrated with phpBB.
  5. Developer site management is minimal, occasional updates of phpBB and MediaWiki will be required.
  6. Sites uptime stats are very good, we had 99.97% uptime for YTD (pingdom stats).
  7. Pingdom alerts are setup to send SMS in case of down time

Included in the auction is an additional premium domain purchased for $5000.

Considering that we haven’t done much development and improvements or any SEO for that matter and the site is doing extremely well, we believe that there is great potential for someone who has time and is passionate about biology.

Additional Revenue Details

Looks like Flippa verifies only 10 months of Adsense, so see full 2 years day by day report as well as Finalised Earnings and Payments report under attachments. Also, strangely it seems that verified earnings are different from those that given in the attached reports. Not sure why, but keep in mind that our Adsense account is in AUD, therefore maybe it's due to some incorrect currency conversion that Flippa is trying to apply? I will inquire with Flippa... but for now what I've put in Gross Revenue is simply the actual earnings as from Adsense's Payments report - since these are actual confirmed earnings that Google would pay. Note that Gross Revenue is in AUD.

Monthly costs:

  1. Cloudflare: $20 USD
  2. Softlayer: $384 USD(this can be reduced with a server upgrade)
  3. Pingdom: $9 USD
  4. Moderator: $708.80 AUD (this is average based on Nov 11 - Oct 12). See attachments for further breakdown

Net Profit has been given in AUD. First 3 points above total $413 USD per month, which is $401 AUD per month on average according to Oanda -

Thus, monthly average expenses total $1109.8 AUD. So, Net Profit is equal to Gross Revenue minus this number. The reason why i've chosen to give this info in AUD is so you don't get completely confused and can see that the Gross Revenue is equal to the numbers from Google reports. If Verified Adsense would be correct then i would convert everything to USD...

Note that numbers are rounded up as per Flippa's requirement. See attachment for decimals.

Ok, here is a reply from Flippa regarding slightly different verified Adsense figures:
The AdSense numbers we show are an average of the last full months. For your listing, this would be an average of August, September and October.

Adding additional screenshots for November is the best way to go. Serious bidders may also want to see other screenshots and further revenue history.

Ok, to everyone asking about the reserve price, we won't disclose it. but to give you an idea, we had private offers of over $400K for this site prior to putting it for the auction. Good luck!

In that price range it would take the winning bidder around 3 years

of adsense income just to break-even.

The site looks very established but 3 years of ADSENSE based income

under PANDA attacks just to break-even is too big of a risk i think.

It is a great website. Can you please explain how you get your traffic? Is it organic or paid. You have unusual high bounce rate considering you have highly relevant content side? I would have expected your website you have at least 3 or 4 minutes on site with at least 5 or 6 page views per visit. Also, under your keywords you have almost 11m visitors under other and not provided in your Google Analytics report? You are you buying traffic from a traffic exchange?
    Social media?
What other measures do you have in place to get visitors back on your site, i.e. newsletter etc?

All our traffic is organic. I would imagine the bounce rates are due to people finding what they want on dictionary pages - these pages can be expanded, possibly breaking a single page into a multi page layout, which would capture the audience and reduce bounce rates if that's a concern. We aren't buying any traffic - no traffic exchange or anything else for that matter.

We aren't doing any social media, newsletters, or user engagement - this is the major area for improvement.

Since bauerm is asking about traffic, I just want to add that our site is linked from all over the web, hence we are loved by the engines. Just for your information, here are just EDU links that Google is showing:""""
Also, we are happy to provide Google Analytics access to serious bidders.

To answer your various questions, please note that I've attached Adsense earnings projections for the next five years, based on last 3 years of performance. Plus given that someone will take care of the site I've also showed what it will be like if the growth will be at extra 10% (quite a moderate number I believe). Hopefully that will help you visualize the true value and potential of this site...

If only you could partner with a textbook company and be an affiliate of a biology eguide. There are so many biology standardized exams, this site can be an affiliate and you can easily add an income stream. arg, I would buy if I had the money

Where are all of the Google Adsense ads? I've looked all through the website and can't find any. How can it be earning that much in Adsense?

To see Adsense you must go directly to our website. If you look at it through Flippa browser it may not work...
