The Inquisitr is a 3 year old site specializing in tech, entertainment, sport and odd + funny news.
Founded by former TechCrunch writer and b5media co-founder (myself) Duncan Riley in May 2008, the site has continued to grow to a point today where it has become a highly respected, quoted, and profitable business.
The site hit a new high in March 2011 when we broke through the 8 million page view mark for the first time. For most of the last 6 months we've run in the 7-8 million page view range.
The site includes nearly totally unique content (99.9%, we ran a "wire service" for a while so there's maybe a couple of dozen press releases on the site) with 17,723 posts at the time the site is being listed, with more posts being created each day.
Included in the auction is inquisitr.com, inquisitr.co.uk, inquisitr.info, inquisitr.me, inquisitr.net, inquisitr.org, inquisitr.us, theinquisitr.com, and inquisitr.com.au
We were also in the process of having the name registered as a Trademark although did not finalize it. We can provide details though that it cleared and is able to be registered having cleared the objection process in Australia (and therefore the United States as well, TM's here have to agree with international names as well) to be registered.
The site includes an Android app that is currently available via the site and The Android Marketplace, and an iPhone app that isn't (was previously available via the Apple App store). We will transfer the iPhone app to you, although we'd suggest that the people who created the Android app would be far better to use if you wanted an iPhone app for the site (the iPhone app is a bit dated.)
Also included is the Facebook page and Twitter account for the site (approx 3000 and 5500 followers respectively.)
The site is up for sale only due to my need to take a break for personal issues (including but not exclusively due to having gone through a divorce.) Indeed, I'm sad to be selling it and it has been my love and passion for the last 3 years, but you know there are times in life where you have to take a seriously long break.
With a good team of writers the site pretty much runs itself these days.
The site currently runs with a core team of 5 writers. None are on any ongoing contract and any monies outstanding to them will be paid by myself upon completion of the sale should you not wish to keep them on.
It's not in the Sitepoint details, but the site is also listed in Google News and we usually go quite well there. The recent changes in Google actually saw us increase traffic marginally because we're not a content farm like so many sites out there.
Additional Revenue Details
$15449 per month in income based on average over last 12 months and allowing for newer advertisers (see spreadsheet attached.)
(NOTE THIS IS REVISED FROM AN EARLIER FIGURE AS WE FORGOT TO ADD AN ADVERTISER TO OUR LIST)
We have slower months and higher months like any site does, and after coming off exclusive contract with our main advertiser last November we've been playing around a bit with alternative advertisers and services (again see revenue spreadsheet.)
As I am in Australia it's been difficult for me to discuss new advertising deals directly with people in the United States, but we have previously had interest from a number of larger firms to provide advertising.
Based on our figures and content, we'd presume someone currently in the business, or with knowledge of the US ad market, will make a lot more money out of the site than I did.
You could also do a lot more with affiliate sales: I usually only play with Amazon around Black Friday time and don't bother the rest of the year, but everytime we play with affiliate sales, we get conversions.
Costs are approx $800 in hosting (Rackspace Cloud sites and Amazon Cloudfront/ S3)...see attachments + writers fees.
We have only included the hosting in expenses as it is strictly up to you what you do with the site. It could possibly be maintained by one or two people who are great bloggers, our you might want to outsource the writing. Current writers costs vary from month to month but average around $5000 a month.
