  • This website earns revenue with Affiliate Income and Product or Service Sales. It is recommended to request a video walk through from the seller to verify all revenue claims.

Seller's Notes

CTR Theme is an advanced, premium WordPress theme that makes it incredibly easy to quickly build informational websites that get high click-through rates on AdSense ads.  The theme has two tangible benefits that have helped it to sell so well -- it saves lots of time and it increases earnings.

Here's a quick run-down of some of the features that make CTR Theme unique (and have helped it to NET over $25k) since March:

  • Uses Google-recommended high earning placements
Google AdSense representatives occasionally contact high-earning websites to recommend ad placement improvements. CTR Theme implements the Google-recommended placements that have helped niche sites earn over $4,000 per month (and sell at auction for as much as $80,000).
  • Automatically hides ads from specific referers
Don't want that DMOZ editor to see ads when they come to your site? Block dmoz-referred traffic from seeing ads. Get initial momentum at StumbleUpon by hiding ads, then display them when traffic is pouring in... you get the idea.
  • Automatically randomizes ad placements to combat ad blindness
With a single click of the button, you can choose to randomize ad placements between the Google-recommended positions. That means every time a visitor comes to the site, the ad layout could be different. This minimizes "ad blindness" and results in improved click-through rates.
  • Lets you track ad layout performance
CTR Theme doesn't just rotate ads -- it lets you track the performance of each ad combination. Normally, you'd know that you're 336 x 280 block is getting clicked if you set up tracking but you wouldn't be able to know if it gets more clicks floated left or right. How about when stacked next to another ad unit or stacked on top of another one? With CTR Theme -- you know.
  • Automatically color matches ads to themes
No need to log in to AdSense to change the colors of your themes. CTR Theme does it for you, automatically applying colors that match the selected subtheme. It also lets you manually override these settings if you want. Super easy.
  • Uses "pushdown images" to give your ads less competition above the fold
You can upload images on a sitewide basis or post-specific that will appear directly above your post title (and ad blocks), pushing your main content further down the screen (below the fold). This means that your prime real estate (above the fold) will be more images and ads... perfect for high CTRs.
  • Includes post-specific controls
Want to hide ads on a specific post or page (Privacy Policy, for example)? Couldn't be easier with CTR Theme. Just click one button.
  • Removes distractions, focuses on ads
CTR Theme subthemes strip out all the garbage that people might click on instead of your ads, drawing their attention to the thing that actually makes you money. Clean themes, big ad blocks.
  • Uses a fully-featured admin panel
No more messing around with theme files or trying to teach yourself PHP. CTR Theme's admin panel lets you make changes with ease.
  • Includes built-in SEO features
No need for plugins to handle your onpage optimization needs. Meta description and keywords can be added on a per-post basis. Prefer to use a plugin? Who am I to judge? CTR Theme will accommodate them.
  • Includes one-click updates via WordPress' admin panel
Benefit from the combined intelligence of other CTR Theme buyers. Their recommendations and feature suggestions get implemented into CTR Theme updates. As a CTR Theme owner, you don't even have to download and reupload files to upgrade -- just click the link in WordPress and everything happens automatically.

This is a rare opportunity to buy a high quality product that boasts glowing reviews early in its life-cycle.  While the site did $20k net last month and is currently on pace to do over $13k this month, there's still a ton of room for growth.  CTR Theme is a great product that has yet to catch the attention of a lot of big name affiliates.  It's succeeded so far entirely on the strength of the product itself, not from the relationships of its owner.

Additional Revenue Details

Here are the gross and net revenue numbers for CTR Theme.  Note that the theme wasn't officially launched until March 1, but a few people found the site in February while I was still refining the landing page and purchased the product.

Gross Revenue:

  • February: $536 (pre-launch)
  • March: $2,412
  • April: $34,295
  • May (1-8): $5,568 (Projected total = $20,306)

Net Revenue:

  • February: $305 (pre-launch)
  • March: $1,220
  • April: $20,228
  • May (1-8): $4,152 (Projected total = $14,148)

Note that the revenue jump in that took place in April (and has continued into May) is the result of affiliates starting to promote the product, and the establishment of a few special discount programs on 3 message boards.

For the average revenue claimed in this auction, I'm using March and April numbers only, as February consisted of sales prior to product launch and May data is incomplete.  I've provided a projection that shows what May's earnings would be if the pace through the first 8 days continued through the end of the month.

CTR Theme still has a lot of room to grow, as it's just started to gain the attention of potential affiliates and hasn't been promoted by a lot of big names yet.

Expenses

The expenses that account for the difference between gross and net numbers are:

  1. Payments to affiliates
  2. Hosting costs (I host on Rackspace Cloud)
  3. Support (time spent answering support requests, typically around 1 hour per day)
  4. Product updates

I've been adding new features to the theme based on user suggestion.  The new owner could continue to do so or leave the theme as-is.  The most significant suggestions have all been integrated already.

Note that upgrade announcements get opened at a 75%+ rate.  This is a great opportunity to make money on the back end by promoting related offers to the 1,125 buyers who have double opted-in to receive upgrade announcements.

Additional Traffic Details

Traffic currently comes from affiliates, message board promotions, and organic search.  Each of these areas could easily be expanded upon.  Here are the traffic numbers to date.  Note that these will differ slightly from the official Google Analytics report, as I've subtracted the visits and pageviews from a bogus traffic source that Google did not filter.

Vists

  • March: 2,373
  • April: 18,151
  • May (1-8): 3,323 (12,800 projected)

Pageviews

  • March: 3,934
  • April: 28,905
  • May (1-8): 4,725 (18,321 projected)

Optimized Sales Page

Using Google Optimizer, I've been able to produce a 118% improvement in conversion from the site's original sales page.  CTR Theme is currently converting at a 4.91% conversion rate using the optimized page, which bodes well for future sales.

Why are you selling this site/product?

---------------------------------------------------
There are a few reasons why I'm looking to sell. The primary one can best be summed up by quoting Shakespeare:
"This above all: to thine own self be true,

And it must follow, as the night the day,

Thou canst not then be false to any man."
I'm a starter, not a finisher. I'm Eppie from flipwebsites.com -- as much as I've tried to change, I'm not a build and hold type of guy.
With this project in particular, I've reached the point where I feel like I've run out of expertise. I built a great product, built an awesome sales page, optimized it, attracted traffic, built links, recruited a few affiliates... but from here on out, I see the path to greater success being more affiliate recruitment. I'd rather someone else take over the project and do that.
I also have like 100 other half-finished projects I'm anxious to complete. A lump sum payment from the sale of this site would definitely help me to finish those.

WordPress typically tries to implement changes that minimally impact existing functionality. That said, the new owner will be responsible for updating the theme if there are changes to WP that impact the theme's functionality. I don't expect this to be a significant issue, as WordPress recently released a major upgrade (3.0), and subsequent additions until the next major release shouldn't result in wholesale functionality changes.

Sami,
In April, I had a number of people mail for me -- that's really a one-time sales boost. In May, I haven't done much in the way of affiliate recruitment. Any new affiliates have been natural additions because they either bought the product and love it, were on the mailing list of someone else who mailed for me in April and are jumping on board, or ran across some of the threads about CTR Theme in the forums. Actively pursuing new affiliates would yield better results.
Despite that fact, I'm still on pace to net around $15k this month. I'm actually slightly ahead of the projected pace I noted in the sales figures in the listing.

Does the new owner have complete copyrights to the software? If not how many licenses will you be selling to other investors? Will you and developer sign a non-complete agreement?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes, the new owner gets full exclusive rights to CTR Theme. I won't be selling additional copies to anyone else.
I'm both the owner of CTR Theme and the developer, and I'll gladly sign a non-compete stating that I will not build or sell another AdSense-focused theme.

I understand you based your asking price on your April-May sales performance.
Will you provide guarantees to the buyer that this level of sales will last for minimum 6 months. If not, what do you anticipate in terms of monthly revenue and would you guarantee that sum?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I can't guarantee sales volume for the new owner because I can't be certain the new owner won't do anything to mess things up. If you start spamming people and gain a bad reputation, don't support customers, get banned from Clickbank or do anything else that would be detrimental to the sales numbers, that shouldn't affect me. I think you understand the impracticality of offering up such a guarantee.
Based on other WordPress products that have had similar initial sales volume, I can say that I believe the product still has a lot of room left to grow. Check out the numbers for Dan Grossman's wpreviewsite.com (https://flippa.com/84185) -- he did over $200k in revenue with a product that had a narrower market. There are lots of other examples of WordPress themes and plugins that could be used to estimate future sales potential for CTR Theme.

Thanks for the reply. The guarantee usually obliges the buyer to follow your instructions or it becomes void. So would you be prepared to make a guarantee the sales volume you are basing your auction price on under these circumstances, provided the buyer follows your instructions.
Also, can you prove Dan Grossman made over $200k in revenue with a product that had a narrower market?

Hi there, I'm not very experienced in marketing, will you be around after the sale to offer advice on how to grow the product further? Perhaps, even as a paid consultant after two months?

I'd be happy to provide a marketing road map for the new owner and provide some post-sale advice. I'd also be willing to consider a paid consultant arrangement for a fixed period post-sale if the buyer prefers.
