Operational Costs

  • Server hosting fees are the primary operational cost. BlogPatrol is currently hosted on my own machine using a business Internet connection that goes to a residence. Therefore, this cost is a variable that will depend on how the buyer wishes to host the site.
  • The primary domain ( is already registered through November of 2020.
  • Sale includes the Dell PowerEdge 2900 server and hardware (unless the buyer does not want it).

BlogPatrol Revenue Levels

  • The declining revenues and traffic trends reflect the fact that BlogPatrol has been on autopilot for over a year due to changes in my personal schedule/priorities.
  • Further, my own skills and knowledge with online advertising are rather limited, so I was never able to maximize the revenue.  For example, I was not able to geo-target my banner advertising the way I would have liked.

How are the members's email accounts hosted? Have you sent a newsletter to the members? Thanks.

Tony_Nguyen ( | $5K )

@Alliance: The member's email accounts are stored in the user table as part of the basic information, which includes: username, email address, blog name, blog URL, etcetera. If you go to the "New User Signup" page at , then you'll see all the data fields that are held in the user table.
I have not done any newsletters, although that would be a useful idea/approach. The admin panel that comes as part of's off the shelf software includes a rudimentary "Email All" function. It is rudimentary because (a) it sends text only email messages and (b) it's a "global email all" function that does not differentiate between who gets the message and who does not.
For one-on-one user support requests, users contact me through the web contact form at . I have a set of email templates that I customize in response to the user. This makes it easy for me to respond, while providing the user the specific attention that s/he is looking for. Examples are password reset and frequently asked questions about blogging and using a stats counter, such as what is / why to "ban an IP" address.
My auction listing refers to a "1-year subscription already paid to WebExOne through June 2012 ($270) for outsourced email/web office services" -- this is a reference to my own email accounts as part of the domain. Early on, I decided to outsource the email function because I wanted to still be able to contact the users even if my web server went down. Similarly, the customer support blog is hosted by under the domain because I wanted it to be independent of my web server.

You mention sending the actual server to the winning bidder - I'm curious where your located.
Also, what sort of connection do you have to the server? I used to host a website from my house through a modest DSL line with a static IP and it worked, but it didn't get a ton of traffic. Can you tell me what sort of pipe you have to the server?

Hello, i tried to create an account but couldn't, this is the messege i see in the signup page - "The information you have requested is not available at this time". Also all your counters are down...this could really hurt the website reputation. Is it just happening now or this problem has been there for a long time. For example on this blog - - you can see an X where the counter image should be in the right sidebar.

@asmeyers: The server is located in the Washington DC Metro Area (Northern Virginia). The website is data intensive, but it's only tracking text data regarding the information about the visitors to users' blogs/website. A pipe that handles 5 megabits per second is more than sufficient for the current needs of the site.

The following hyperlink provides my server's Webalizer stats for the last twelve completed months (from July 2011 going back to August 2010):
Under the "Monthly Totals" section, you will see the column displaying "KBytes."

One correction to my previous post: The hyperlink shows simply the last twelve months (from August 2011 going back to September 2010), not the last twelve "completed" months.

You stated that the website gets about 15k visitors a month while you say that there were 18,475 accounts (17.92%) logged in within last 24 hours. How can you explain the discrepancy ?

Does the sale of the site include transferring the site 100% (working on my server) by you?

@markovitzt: I'm having some analysis done in follow-up to your question, and I expect to have an update posted later today.

I've received a number of similar questions via private messages indicating that potential buyers are not interested in taking on a used server because (a) it is difficult to know the condition of the hardware and (b) they would have to either migrate the site to a hosted solution or colocate the machine somewhere.
In response to this feedback, I've spent the last week migrating the site from my homegrown server to a hosted solution with a monthly fee of $250 for 4 GB RAM, 160GB Hard Disk, 2,500 GB Bandwidth. The historical user stats/data (older database partitions) will also be made available via Amazon Web Services S3 solution. The new owner will have the option to (a) use those partitions for data mining; (b) making it available to the users; or (c) just getting rid of the data.
NOTE: I've eaten the cost (as I should) on this migration: $250 for getting the hosted solution, plus $700+ already for the site/database migration and configuration/optimization tweaking. (I only mention this because the auction was initially listed as including the server hardware, which, based on feedback received, is not preferred nor feasible. In lieu of the server, I've setup the hosted solution.)
In summary, the auction will not include the used server, but it will include the website/database working correctly on a hosted server that is paid for one month in advance (at least through end of September since the auction closes on 8/31/2011). I will provide 30 days of support (also through the end of September) to help the new owner learn how the site works. The support will be in the form of phone, email, walk-throughs of the site/server/database, and updates to existing documentation.

Server is down for maintenance. Please try again later.

The discrepancy has to do with the two numbers referencing different metrics and using different definitions for those metrics. The user metrics are pulled from an internal query of the database based on logins. Google Analytics is entirely separate from that.
In order to give folks a chance to look at the Google Analytics first-hand, I'm providing the following (temporary) public username and password:

USERNAME: [email protected]

The stats on Google Analycis go back to about June of 2007. Also, you can access Webalizer stats at the following URL as another point of comparison:
Hope this helps.

The "" is a section of the site that used to be populated by a third party company that provided feeds of affiliates. A while back, the company stopped providing that service, and (unfortunately) I did not take down that link from the menu.
