Determine your Target

Now that we’ve been around for over 2 years, we have had a lot of exposure to how different people go about buying websites. Some get it right and others evidently need a little more coaching on how to effectively buy websites with confidence.

As much as we try to make the process of buying and selling websites as easy as possible, the fact remains that it can be a tricky business – it’s not like you’re buying a toaster!

No two websites are exactly the same, definitions of value can differ greatly between users, website buyers and sellers can be located across the globe etc…

Despite this, hundreds of websites change hands each week on Flippa and our website buyer survey results indicate the vast majority of website buyers intend to buy again.

So how do you get it right?

While we may all have different skill sets, areas of interest, and risk appetites, there are a number of typical checks and balances that any potential website buyer should be doing as part of their acquisition activity.

We’ve put together the Pro Website Buyer’s Guide as a point of reference for industry best practice regarding buying websites – this guide draws on our behind-the-scenes website marketplace insights as well as consulting with industry experts such as FlipFilter.

The guide covers key areas such as:

  1. Defining yourself – eg knowledge, skills, resources…
  2. Defining your search – getting the most out of Flippa’s search tools
  3. Understanding the opportunity – conducting due diligence on the website and the website owner
  4. Engaging in the Auction – knowing your budget, different bid strategies
  5. Completing the Transaction – making the site your own

This guide is free to all registered Flippa user from the Tools and Resources section. If you’re not a registered Flippa user, you can preview the first 2 chapters or otherwise register for free to get the full version at Flippa.com/signup

Now if only News Corp had read this before buying MySpace from Chris DeWolfe and Tom Anderson in 2005 for $580 million…

I hope Flippa could team up with FlipFilter and make a post about these adsense websites claiming to gain traffics only from “Twitter”. It’s shady, and usually sellers try to avoid being asked to install Google Analytics.
