This Week: New Features – and Half a Million in Sales!
Posted on October 16th, 2009 by Dave Slutzkin
A big week of sales on Flippa, with half a million dollars changing hands!
Congratulations to all those involved – and many thanks from us. It’s very flattering to have so many great buyers and sellers put their trust in Flippa, and we’re still working hard to make sure it’s the best place to do your business. Here’s some of the more recent changes:
Video Attachments on Listings
If you’re running a listing, go to the Attachment Management page and you’ll notice a new option:
Shows the Attachment Management screen where you add a video attachment to your listing.
That’s right, it’s now possible to add YouTube videos to your listings. These will appear on the listing page looking something like this:
Shows how a video attachment displays when on the listing page.
A click on it will pop up a nice lightbox and allow users to play the video, simple!
What will you use this for? Well, I think it could be really useful for giving more credible proof of revenue or traffic details – if you screencast yourself clicking through your PayPal or Analytics account, buyers will have much more confidence in your figures. But, of course, the possibilities are endless. Maybe you want to pitch your site to potential buyers, or just have a chat to let them know who you are and why you’re here.
New Preset Searches – Entry Level up to High-End
A picture speaks a thousand words:
Shows the search bar on Flippa with the new preset searches in place.
You’ll have noticed the new presets that we’ve put into the search bar. These came out of repeated requests for a category system similar to the “Startup/Established/Premium” that used to exist on SitePoint. Now we have Entry Level, Mid-Range and High End searches.
However, these are better than the Marketplace ones were. These search directly on the Reserve Price or Minimum Offer. The only way to get your site into the High End search is to have a Reserve Price set over $10,000. Sure, you can cheat by setting your reserve higher than you expect to get – but then you’re unlikely to sell your site.
Let us know how these are working for you, but we think it’s a big improvement for both buyers and sellers.
Search for “Most Active”
Also in the above image, you can see the Most Active preset search. This is another much requested feature. It allows you to see quickly where all the action is – just in case you should also be checking out the sites that everyone else is bidding on…
Option: Don’t Automatically Relist as Private Sale
Most sellers seem to like the fact that if their auction doesn’t sell, it’s automatically relisted as a Private Sale listing, which gives them exposure. Private Sales are selling really well – about 20% of our sales – but some people want more control over their listing. So, now sellers have the option of saying “don’t relist my listing automatically”.
Show the Revenue Source Information
We’ve always collected information from sellers on where their revenue comes from, but we weren’t previously displaying that information. Why not? Honestly, I’m not sure! It was an oversight – one which we’ve now corrected:

We also added in the “Affiliate Income” revenue source, as that’s an important one which we weren’t previously capturing. Thanks again to all those people who let us know of our oversight!

I like the changes and looking forward to these.
Only thing I would change personally is Private Sales
I think this is an awesome feature but it needs its own tab .. it shouldn’t show these on our recent paid listings and bump them down .. I would think as time wears on .. there will be hundreds a day getting listed as private sales where sales are ending at the same day. This will or already has for me and some others caused us to think , hmm do I list now do I wait a couple hours …
So, I will choose not to list as private sales for now but if there is ever a tab for these to have there own spot instead of the main recently paid for listings , I’m all game and would surely choose to relist my auction as a private sale each and every time.
Nice Work Flippa! Keep up the good work.

Great additions to the site:
I have a suggestion, what not allow us to add our own private comments to the listings page.
It should be a little text box that saves, so when I login I can see my notes.
There are many times I’ll visit the same site over and over again during the week, becuase I didn’t reconize the domain.
This is a waste of time. allowing us to place notes would save time and help buyers stay organized

Not bad, copying someone else’s features (competitors), 2 brownie points for floppa. I suppose its only fair your users get some features what with you robbing there revenue through commission.

I agree with TotalWebCreation. Since private sales are relisted for free, they should not cause newly listed paid ads to quickly fall down the front page. Put these relists into another section, perhaps list them in a sidebar or underneath the brand new auctions.

Also.. an option to remove/hide a listing from your own search results would be good. There are many sites Im not interested in and its annoying to see them continually pop up. If we can hide individual auctions (permanently) it would make it easier to focus on the ones we actually might buy.

Still waiting for the option to purchase credits in advance. How long does this take to implement, guys? This is an urgent need for many of us!
You’ve lost out on several hundred bucks from me just in the last 2 months because I couldn’t purchase credits when I had cash available and I didn’t have anything available to list at the time.
Please get this implemented as soon as possible!

Hello,
I’m not sure if there is a specific place to give suggestions so I am doing it here.
It would be nice if when you view a users profile you could see 2 additional things:
1) The total amount (in $’s) that user has sold, i.e:
“premiumEsites has sold $10,525 worth of sites/domains on flippa”
2) The total amount (in $’s) that user has bought, i.e:
“premiumEsites has bought $10,525 worth of sites/domains on flippa”
I think this would help buyers and sellers when evaluating the trust of each other. It would also be nice if you earned trust points based on these amounts. Some people may not want these exact values to be shown in their account, but the values could still be awarded trust points.
Thanks

Awesome changes. But, I’d love for there to be improvements on the Search feature. Its very hard to narrow down the search results if you’re looking for sites in a specific niche. Perhaps you could make it so that we can search keywords in the ‘Title’ only instead of the entire listing description.

I agree with TotalWebCreation and Rebecca. Private Sales had their first time shot and should be moved into a separate category. There’s too many going unsold and pushing down fresh, new and paid for listings (and paid for re-listings). The tab does say “New Listings”. The tab that says “Ended Unsold” looks bad and think it would look better if it said “Private Sales”.
Since this is the 3rd request for this, can you respond to the issue here?
Thanks

Congratulations. A huge milestone for such a young company. Won’t be too far to the million by now.

I agree with Rebecca that a hide/bury/don’t show me again option on both listings and sellers would be a major plus. Unfortunately there is a lot of junk on here which makes it difficult to see the quality listings and it would be good to be able to easily make sure you won’t see these junk listings again after you have opened them once.

Amy,
Unfortunately, this has in the past been a major source of credit card fraud when implemented in the obvious way, so this time we’re putting more work into it to make sure that there won’t be so many problems. We hope to have it done soon.

@Acey, That’s a spectacular idea! +1

What on Earth? Our users requested these features and we added them.
Are you really a representative of websitepush? I like your use of my CSS and icons from the SitePoint Marketplace, very original.

There is a search syntax that you’d be able to use if we make a few minor changes to our search index. I’ll do some testing and post back here shortly (it won’t ‘just work’ currently). It’s an @syntax along the lines of:
@title “Whatever” AND NOT @description “something”
This gets quite complex for the average user so it’s not documented.
October 27, 2009 - 3:29 am
Ok, it looks like we should be able to enable the ability to do this very soon.

I’ll raise this topic for discussion, I agree this could be a useful metric.

Looking at the tab set-up again, the Ended Unsold does look bad for sellers who simply didn’t reach their reserve amount. Why can’t it say Private Sales and move it over beside the New Listings column. Then if a seller chooses to relist it at auction at half price, it can appear over on the New Listings again?
Ending Soon and Just Sold would look better beside each other.
I have to look to see how many are ending every time I list so I don’t get pushed down on my new and paid for listing or relisting too fast.
Please consider a new set-up here.
I hope other sellers who agree will speak up here.
