Pixie is a open source web application that will help you quickly create your own website. Many people refer to this type of software as a content management system (cms), we prefer to call it a small, simple, website maker. Pixie was released on May 1st 2008 and has gained a strong following in the Open Source community.
Pixie is an award winning CMS that has been downloaded well over 27,000 times and translated into 18 languages. In 2009 Pixie took the runner up prize in the Packt publishing Open Source CMS awards in the category of "most promising open source CMS". In 2010 all eyes will be on Pixie to improve on last years result.
You are buying the brand, website, intellectual property/copyright of the code base and assets detailed below. The website will be moved to your own servers as part of the sale.
If you would like to see some of the Pixie sites around the internet you can view the showcases on the Pixie blog.
Why the sale?
A great deal of time and effort has been put into Pixie over the last few years and reaching the decision to sell has not been easy for me. I have reached the point where I need to focus on my main business (toggle) and cannot dedicate my time to developing the project. If the project remains open source I would intend to keep active in the forums and possibly provide bug fixes for the 1.0x branch as well.
Here is what you get:
Domain Names
The following domains are included in the sale:
- getpixie.co.uk (main url - including all blog posts, wiki/support content, demo site and user guides)
- pixieapp.co.uk
- pixieapp.com
- pixiecms.co.uk
- * pixiesite.co.uk (Expires 5th May 2010)
- * mypixie.co.uk (Expires 5th May 2010)
- * mypixiesite.co.uk (Expires 5th May 2010)
- * mypixiesite.com (Expires 5th May 2010)
* I will renew all of the domains above that expire soon if Pixie sells at the buy it now price.
External Assets
The sale also includes the following assets:
- Administration of the Google Group with 2500 messages and 350 members. The group is active and supportive.
- Access to our mailing list software and more specifically the Pixie mailing list.
- Administration of the Google Code account.
- The Pixie Twitter account which is fairly new. It automatically updates when a new blog post is made.
What you don't get
Pixie has had many contributions from the community and the website lists a number of themes, modules and blocks that have been supplied by others. These themes, modules and blocks must remain with there original copyrights and authors in place. You will not own the copyright or be allowed to use these assets without the permission of the original authors.
Testimonials
Our users love Pixie. This is a couple of examples of the feedback we receive:
"I'm only an accountant not a coder. Actually its a testament to the power of Pixie that even a novice like me can get some of this stuff to work."
"I am usually not the first to place a comment on websites I visit. But I have used Pixie for a few months now, for my Internet Marketing Weblog, and I must say that it's the most brilliant CMS I have ever used."
Questions
As this is one of my first listings on Flippa I am sure I have probably missed something. If you have any questions please get in touch.
Revenue Details
At present Pixie creates a very small income via referrals to hosting partners, advertising on the website and occasional donations. The project has the potential to generate more income and our ideas have included:
- Moving away from Open Source - charging per download. Even at $1 the 30,000 downloads we have had would soon add up.
- Providing hosting via subscription.
- Pixie pro: access to exclusive themes, modules and plugins.
- Embedded Google search into each download with adsense connected to Pixie.
- Theme sales, Module Sales, Block Sales.
- Hosting partnerships - we already have one in place.
- Advertising throughout the site.
- Paid for support & support subscriptions, possible pay per question.
- Corporate sponsorship.
- A premium version of Pixie with more features.
- Adverts via buysellads.com - we are already using this service.
The traffic alone is valued at $23,000 on websiteoutlook.com

Who primarily develops pixie at the present time?
The latest release was mainly developed by Tony & Sam - both contributors to the project. The rest of the development and the initial work was done by myself. You can see code updates here: http://code.google.com/p/pixie-cms/updates/list for more info.
Being GNU/Open source, it means that any future releases containing code from the existing codebase would also need to be open source, is that correct? What is the affiliate revenue at the present time?
As far as I am aware, some parts of the code (those based on other scripts and libraries that are open source) must remain open source. However a good chunk of the code (approx 80%) that was written by myself I believe can have its licence changed as essentially we own the copyright to that - if you win the auction you will own this.
One thing to note: open source does not necessarily mean free to own - just free to modify. So you could keep the project open source and still charge for Pixie.
Revenue from the hosting affiliates so far is $150. We have had other sign ups but this particular affiliate does not seem brilliant at paying out. We have made about $40 from http://buysellads.com/ and had around £200 ($400) from donations.
