How large is the translation industry? Many industry pundits have very strong opinions about the size of the industry, and I used to share some of those strong opinions. Estimates range from $3 billion to $30 billion or more, but the reality of the matter is that all of these estimates could be correct.

About My Project – It’s like my child, so I'll feel good if I know that it will be in good hands
I’m a professional translator and I have been in this industry since 2000 (I will send you my resume/link to it on translator’s portals upon your request). I love what I am doing but as you know some ppl like to create, while some ppl prefer the management part. I’ve created this website as some of my clients wanted translations into other languages, and I had to find someone whom I could outsource these projects. Gradually I came to the thought that it’s a brilliant idea to offer such services. This is how everything started. As I do have a lot of translation projects I had no time to handle the negotiation/bidding part, so the translation agency was mainly neglected.
Still I had few large projects (you can see some of them here English > Malagasy translation project about 250.000 words, 1 book translation abt 25,000 words, and 9 books 200 pages each). Although the margin sometimes is not very high, it is high enough to make a decent profit. For example, with Malagasy translation I had only 1 cent margin that made me $2.5k net profit. With the smaller projects and direct clients you make upto 30% of the project revenue on average. So you can imagine what amount you can make if you work hard on it. By working hard I mean placing bids, responding to requests, negotiating with clients, etc. Although that’s not hard, it’s time consuming – you can easily spend 3-8 hours/day just bidding and replying, negotiating with translators, contacting those from the database, explaining details, etc. As I do have other projects, I simply cannot physically handle all this.
As I’ve already mentioned, I will explain all details about the routine operation from A to Z. It’s quite simple, so you will learn everything about it easily. I’ll send all samples of invoices, contracts, non-disclosure agreements, etc.
I’ll also tell my strategy I was intended to implement to help achieve high search engine rankings. With good serps the revenue will also come from search engine, so you’ll be able to get lots of direct clients.

I currently own a copywriting/essay writing network, which is much more on autopilot but this is my primary project, an autoblogging “empire” and autoblog creation service, movie streaming website, so I’m really not that good in trying to handle everything in my hands. I feel the time has come for this project to get to a higher level with a dedicated person who can spend time on it.

Revenue Details

it depends both on language pair and client. I'm always looking for translators who provide a nice balance price/quality. Thanks to crisis (ironically, though) it is possible to find translators who agree for a cheaper rate. On average, approx. 10 cents/source word for the client, but I always offer flexible rates, ready to negotiate. For example, I have few translators working on 7 cents/word (Korean), while the average rate for this language pair is 10-12/cents/word.
I will provide detailed and thorough instruction and explanation to the buyer on how to charge, what price, everything.
I feel somewhat uneasy with selling this website, but I need urgent money due to family problems.
If you like to communicate and negotiate, this is your business :) It is all about communicating.
In fact, I prefer to be a translator, to take one large technical project on semi-conductors or machinery to earn $2+k/mo from translation alone, instead of facing the necessity to maintain daily correspondence with clients :)

amitcor, negotiation is conducted by email. I show that I am willing to negotiate, learn client's budget, determine rates based upon the potential client's budget and my efforts, discuss estimate with the potential client, etc, etc I'll provide all information and recommendations to the buyer, it's very easy to learn, no rocket science.

I'm currently bidding and taking orders on few portals (the stats is from 1 portal only, the remainder is by email as these portals have no graphic stats + clients submitting inquiry form on the website (responses, etc.). I do not actively bid now as I am busy with other projects. That's basically the reason why I'm selling - I have no time to work on it.

No, it seems like you just didn't get it right (or I couldn't explain it to you in a correct way).
As I've told already, the other places where I bid have no graphic statistics, and all correspondence is being conducted via email. As you can see, there is an inquiry form on my website, some clients submit the form, asking for estimate, and then I do the work. I will provide all related correspondence to the buyer, of course.
Also, I have an ongoing project English-Russian at the moment, few short translations for company running automated blood processing systems business, one with fueling systems (if you are asking abt August).
There were also other projects, like subtitling for Queen's concert with Paul Rodgers, subcontracting work, etc.

You can earn that amount of money (and, possibly, more), as this kind of translation agency targets all languages, so you do not stick to one language pair. You just need to spend more time, actively bidding on projects (I'll explain all details, how, what price, reliable translators, quality assurance for translation, everything).
There are two ways to get more income with it - both of them will require your time, though - translation business is not an autopilot project, but if you are not afraid of work, you'll be very successful in it. So, the first way is to place as much as possible bids (in this case, as one of the projects I've won, even if the margin between your price and what you offer to your translators is not very high, 1-3 cents net profit per word on a large project of 60-250,000 words make thousands. You'll need to continue negotiation with this Japanese corporation (they currently have translation agency, but it's Japanese and they charge too much, so the corporation wants to find a better agency. As they promise abt million words/year, if your margin (corporation's budget minus translators fees minus proofreaders' fees) will be minimum 2-4 cents/word (Japanese are direct clients), you can calculate approximate income.
You'll also need to continue looking for new clients, I'll consult you. The second way is to make the website rank high in serps for few high and few low competitive keywords (i have a plan for it, and I'll explain my strategy, I do the same with my essay writing project, this is my primary project now, and this strategy works just perfectly), so you'll get also organic traffic and direct clients whom you'll charge more.
Basically, to earn abt 10k net profit you need to take appr. 4-6 large translation projects/month, which is relatively easy and possible, if you spend every day in negotiations/bidding/contacting, taking into consideration the fact that we target all languages.
The market for translation is close to unlimited, so if you are active enough, you can earn a lot. To tell you the truth, I love to translate, I love to create, to test new projects, but I'm not that good in the negotiation/management part ;-/ It seems like everyone here has his own way.
I see that, as well as translation services, the site also offers 'localization' and 'Special' services, presumaby you also sub-contact any such work and would provide full details of relevant documentation etc to successful bidder. Please confirm.
Also, given the amount/nature of information that is only made available after a successful bid, bidders have to take a lot on trust and therefore it might be appropriate to consider a staged payment - i.e. an initial payment and then a profit share up to a pre-agreed amount.

Right you are. The site also offers localization and other services like copywriting, etc. The copywriting part was subcontracted to my own (another webproject), but the successful bidder will be free to subcontract it to anybody else, of course. Localization relates to translation part, it's just another side of the translation activity.
As for a staged payment, no staged payment option is available. This is good business at a fair price to make best use of business opportunities available in translation industry. The successful bidder may turn it into a profitable offline business (if he wishes), as translation businesses are thriving despite fierce competition. With the slowdown of the U.S. economy, companies are trying to sell their products abroad and it’s a good business these days with everything going global. (and, honestly, my boyfriend will kill me, don’t you want me stay alive in good health? :)
The successful buyer will get, obviously, all rights to this business, the website with domain name, all email accounts created, the company itself with all related correspondence, documents, information about freelancers, clients, all accounts related to the website (everywhere, where I bid on new translation projects, both paid and free ones, etc, all contact information, sample documents I use (non-disclosure agreements, contracts, purchase orders, invoices, etc, etc, etc.
Of course, I’ll prepare a thorough and detailed explanation to assist the buyer with his new business, recommendations concerning rates in specific language pairs, how I find good translators when I need them urgently and those from the database are unavailable, and all important information he will need to run this business smoothly. I will help him the first month after sale to answer all possible questions about routine, and anything else he may need.

Lourent, this is how my statement looks like. I have statistics by months and orders, I use this account for translation only. As you should understand I cannot disclose you customer's name at the moment (only to the buyer) and all other personally identifiable information, so if I would show break down by customers, it will look like that l’ll need to cut all these details, only amounts/date will remain. Will the statement that looks like “April 20,2009 Job no. XXXX amount paid” help you?
I know there are prospective buyers who have a strong incentive to buy this business, but some ppl also may use the opportunity to gather information in order to learn about the client base, operating methods and business plans. I know you as a smart person should understand this. I’ll disclose all details to the buyer, of course, along with my plans and recommendations concerning future growth and how to get a decent profit. I own a similar business (not related to translation, though) and I use these methods there, they work perfectly. My hot season in my business will start in few weeks, I’ll be busy with it till the end of May, so translation will be neglected again. That’s yet another reason I want to find a dedicated person who will continue with this business.
