Description

Introduction PSP-Vault.com is a fansite for the Sony PSP, or "Playstation Portable". I launched the site in February 2005, about a month before the launch of the PSP itself in North America. Since launch, PSP-Vault has seen enormous success and is now an authoritative resource for PSP fans. The site boasts over 60,000 members, and adds around 150 per day. There are over 89,000 posts on the PSP-Vault forums. Members are strongly encouraged to contribute to the site, and they do so; members regularly submit news articles to be posted to the front page and files to be posted in our repository of PSP-related files, the "File Vault". It is a very active community. PSP-Vault's continued growth has been the result of strategic positioning, word-of-mouth, and offering unique content and features to PSP users. Some of our flagship content includes the Firmware and Homebrew Capabilities Guide, which has over 81,000 reads in the past 3 months alone. Additional popular items can be found in the site's Top List. As you can see, the most read article on the site is the "Stuck Pixel Fixer", with over 760,000 reads. When the site launched, our premier feature was providing a "File Vault" that allows users to exchange PSP game saves. While other PSP sites focus solely on volume - posting "news" articles for even the most minor developments, essentially spamming visitors - PSP-Vault has focused on effectively leveraging properly timed and informative content. This blend of insight and information has made PSP-Vault amongst the most well-known PSP fansites, even amongst traditional publications; the site was featured as the "Fansite of the month" in the January 2007 issue of Gamesmaster, a major UK gaming magazine. The site has also been mentioned by name in PSM and GameInformer magazines. But I don't need to go into PSP-Vault's accolades too much here: a quick search on virtually any major search engine will return numerous places PSP-Vault has been mentioned, linked to, or heralded. Time Commitment As you may have gathered from the previous section, there's no reason to try and paint a rosy picture: upkeep of a community site such as PSP-Vault is a lot of work. This is not a get rich quick scheme, nor is it a turn-key site whose revenue streams are based on monetizing ill-obtained RSS content feeds. Those who are interested in purchasing a "set it and forget it" site or passive income should look at other auctions. PSP-Vault is a real community website with real users who demand real content, so real work must be done to ensure its continued success. That said, the rewards, financial and otherwise, are certainly available for those willing to make the necessary sacrifices. Included with sale In addition to the site itself, you'll receive: -Source files for logos, page templates, and so on (these could be snail-mailed on a DVD, if you prefer -- there are a lot of files) -My directory of project outlines, may give you some good ideas for growth in the future

    Nice :)

Thank you for the excellent Description.

A few questions for you though.

1: How much time is needed to run this site?
2: can the new owner take over the existing hosting? Or do I need to move to my own server?
3: How long has the site had the current design?
4: Is there a need for other licences? If so, what are the costs?
5: Can yu please provide stats on referrals, bounce rate and time spent on site.

um thats all I can think of for the moment.

    1. The time commitment varies depending on how much of the work you want to do yourself. To post a decent news article to the front page, you're looking at roughly an hour's worth of checking news sources, formatting images, and so on. I try to keep a flow of at least 1 article per day, regardless of whether or not it's a weekend. Of course, if there is a big announcement or a lot to cover, you may spend 2 hours or so on the news. Likewise, if you want to post a feature article (I usually do this at least once per month), that will probably take a few hours as well.

In addition, there are some other administrative duties to be taken care of, like verifying uploads, moderating the forums, that sort of thing. These total to maybe 30 minutes per day, but again this depends on the level of involvement you want on the site. If you want the forums to be the Wild Wild West with no moderation whatsoever, that's your choice (but keep in mind AdSense policies against adult content and such).

    2. I'll have to speak with the host, but I don't think he'll have a problem with it. In fact I would recommend that the buyer do this because the existing setup has a lot of tweaks and such that were made specifically for running PSP-Vault.

    3. Since we launched. Visually it has remained the same, but about halfway through 2006 I had the design recreated using a lot of CSS and DIVs rather than HTML tables.

    4. Licenses, not sure what you mean about that. If you mean licenses like how we use the word "PSP" in our site name, then there aren't any. We could probably have a rather long discussion on the legalities associated with using copyrighted phrases throughout the site, but fansites are historically not the target of legal action. They're "fansites", so for a company like Sony, attempting to shut them down would just be a bad idea from a business perspective. Sony even regularly links to fansites on their new blog.

While I'm sure this is not accurate http://www.smartpagerank.com/result.php?domain=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.psp-vault.com
has this site valued at only $8,177.00

I think your starting bid price is too high.
I am looking for a site to invest in but, a $30,000 investment minus expenses gives the new owner a very low ROI.
It will take over a year before your start to see any returns...anything can happen in that time!

Couple that with a bounce rate of 60% and a "time spent of site " of 0-10 seconds being near on 62% your asking price is a little to high.

    Sorry :)

OK, thanks for your input. I believe the figures stand on their own.

Going back to question #2 for others who are interested, my host said he's fine with continuing to host the site even if it changes hands.

Anyone else who feels like using valuation calculators can feel free to try this one:
    http://www.cwire.org/website-value-calculator/

Since it gives a value of $263,368

Unfortunately, the 60,000 members are just the CMS's members, and not the forum's. The forum is quite dead consider the amount of CMS members the site has. BTW, I can't seems to find the GorillaNation ads. Either way, $30,000 asking price is actually close to his BIN (12 X Month Revenue).

The site is single sign-on; users use the same account to submit articles, post comments, upload files, post on the forums, and so on. As for the forums activity, well, I guess there's really nothing I can say about that. From a revenue perspective, the forums don't have an easily measurable impact. Only members are permitted to post on the forums, and none of the members see advertisements. Of course, displaying ads to members is your decision, as I addressed in the auction description.

GorillaNation ads (served by doubleclick.net) appear in the header (the 728x90) and immediately below it (the 300x250) when there are campaigns running. They default to AdSense ads if there is no campaign.

    >Either way, $30,000 asking price is actually close to his BIN (12 X Month Revenue).

But he has it set as the opening bid not the bin. It is unrealistic starting price IMO.

    The http://www.cwire.org/website-value-calculator/
has problogger.net valued at almost 3 mil! I'm sure Darren would be very happy to get 3 mil.

Liam and all those sellers reading this...
I am a serious buyer and I have cash to spend now! BUT I am looking for a site that has real traffic (this one does)
and that will give me monthly income of at least $1,500.00 from day one and is a good deal.

Boppa, if you feel like making an offer below the starting bid price, please feel free to contact me privately (the auction guidelines don't seem to restrict this). Otherwise, I think you've made your point :)

He is not the only one got money to spend on sitepoint :). Take his word like a grain of sand, and especially, when he is basing his calculation of a website's worth on some script using standard algorithm for all websites. Can the script calculate the visitor to pageview ratio? Can it calculate the demographic?

I'm not basing the value of the site based on that script along. Nor am I saying it is worth that figure!
What I was saying is, the starting bid is too high IMO. If that was the BIN amount then we'd be talking.
In fact, I'd say that it would be sold already.

Having done my due diligence - which included ringing the a sales manager at EBGames (someone I know quite well) to check out sales figures on the different consoles and asking a few general questions about Sony strategies etc...I wish Liam all the luck in the world.

I hope he gets his price.

If you are going to take lower bids please let me know as I am equally interested and as boppa put it so elegantly, "cash to spend now".
